View Full Version : Tales of Wonder and Woe: UWOL #3
Gabriel Yeager May 13th, 2007, 02:44 PM Thats a cool sounding bird Geir! thanks for the description!
*sobering* You guys all have beautiful shots! Just kidding.. Well, you do all have nice scenery, and I have nothing -- yet. :D
I still have a week at least... Maybe I'll be able to get something in.
Last time I did not even shoot until the last day before the deadline! But then I got the nice time extension due to the up-loader. - Hey Mat, is there by any-chance something wrong with the server? lol!
Happy Mothers day to the moms out there!
~Gabriel
Rob Evans May 14th, 2007, 02:22 AM Glad to hear you guys are getting on ok.
Had everything planned for a full day's shoot yesterday in three locations, batteries charged, tapes labelled etc. It rained, hard, pretty much all day :(
Time for the backup plan methinks !!!!!
Mat Thompson May 14th, 2007, 03:31 AM Rob.....I know the feeling ! This rain is killing me, there is a break Wednesday by the way then on friday too :) good luck
Per : Great opener ! I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your work, I bet you've got something special in store!
Per Johan Naesje May 14th, 2007, 03:40 AM Per : Great opener ! I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your work, I bet you've got something special in store!
Hmmm... yes, I gonna use some really interesting jib-shoots which I think gonna be very specially ;-)
Geir Inge May 14th, 2007, 05:44 AM Great picture Per Johan.
As always I'm looking forward to see your work.
Jib, now that's something worth waiting for :)
I did also a manuscript for uwol#3, but I had to change it a bit "on the road". I've been on mountains, on the shore and out on a boat-trip.
The trip on the boat was the most stunning, but still the hardest challenge.
It's not easy to get steady pictures with the boat swinging on the waves.
My tripod was useless of cause, so most of my 2 hours handheld shooting I can't use for uwol#3. Never the less I think I've got enough on tape for my 3 min of the wild, but as it is I might take a last trip to Runde for more close-ups.
Mat Thompson May 14th, 2007, 06:02 AM Care to divulge some more info on this jib shoot Per !!?? ;) come on...
Brian McKay May 14th, 2007, 09:21 AM That's that, my entry is finished and uploading as I type this. Why so early? My darn job got in that way again I have to leave town this afternoon and will be gone for the week. I don't think I'll have internet access where I'm headed but you never know. So to be on the safe side I'm sending the film now. I wish I had more time to tidy up some of the cuts etc but I'm out of time.
Good luck everyone.....Brian
PS: Snow, Snow and more Snow....sorry

Dale Guthormsen May 14th, 2007, 11:10 PM Good evening,
I finished my uwol with my gl2 and was dead pleased with it. then came compression problems, 60interlaced and 4:3. I gave up trying to get it right.
I got my xl2 back and wrote a new script. I have got some decent footage. I have several other shots to complete yet this week..
Here are a couple grabs from this week.
Geir Inge May 15th, 2007, 12:14 AM Some fine pictures there, Dale.
I uploaded my file yesterday, my plan was to get some more closeups, but as my job is giving me some extra tasks for our national holiday (17th may), I've got no sparetime left. Have a nice go with your xl2.
Trond Saetre May 15th, 2007, 02:36 AM You guys are lucky to have some/most of it completed. As of now, I still have nothing to use for uwol3. Got some on tape earlier, but that idea went straight to the trash again.
Hopefully I will have time to make something the next few days.
(that also includes coming up with a new idea, haha)
Oliver Reik May 15th, 2007, 03:45 AM Wow, you guys were already very busy and did some lovely shots...
I will meet on Friday afternoon with one of my colleagues with his wild dog to hopefully get some wild footage. ;-)
I am already looking forward to see your guy's movies.
Regards,
Oliver
Rob Evans May 15th, 2007, 04:23 AM Well, the sun appeared last night after work!!
And then disappeared 5 minutes after i got to my spot :(
So the backup plan went into action, and by 10.30 last night i called it a wrap :-) Time to hit the edit suite tonight!!!
I wanna say thanks for putting this idea together - I was blown away by most of the footage i captured last night, and if it hadn't been for the UWOL challange i doubt i would have even thought about doing it....
PS as I'm a bit new to this, are many of you guys putting links up to HD content afterwards as well? I'm editing HD so I guess i will push out a WMV HD copy, but i guess it will hover round the 200mb mark.
Mat Thompson May 15th, 2007, 04:46 AM Hey Rob, blimey I'm intrigued as to what you might be shooting at that time of day in Berkshire.....hhhmmmm !
Rob Evans May 15th, 2007, 04:57 AM Hey Rob, blimey I'm intrigued as to what you might be shooting at that time of day in Berkshire.....hhhmmmm !
Hehe ;-) all will be revealed.
Interestingly, the spot i did get to last night was on the thames. I set up, the sun disappeared and I heard a high pitched bird call from behind me. I turned around, and 10 feet away a kingfisher had just landed on a willow branch. But, by the time i had turned the camera round, it had flown off.....
Mat Thompson May 15th, 2007, 05:11 AM LOL....hey I know the feeling oh so well !! Still a treat though huh !
Rob Evans May 15th, 2007, 05:20 AM LOL....hey I know the feeling oh so well !! Still a treat though huh !
Absolutley! For me, they're up there with bee-eaters and rollers from a beauty perspective!! Again, i think thats the hook for this competition, I was walking through a meadow getting buzzed by swallows last night and thought "now wouldnt it be great to film them...." It makes you think more about whats going on around you :-)
Kevin Railsback May 15th, 2007, 04:16 PM I got a shot of a mushroom. Did I mention that already? :)
Bruce Foreman May 15th, 2007, 07:59 PM Did a final re-edit last night, tightened things up a bit, and it's uploading now.
The server must really be busy, total upload time for 54.2 MB will be about 55 minutes. I still don't like what the compression does to quality in converting to .mov file format, I had to use about 44% on the quality slider in the QT7 Pro settings to get below 60MB. It looks good so long as you stick with the normal small size viewing window.
I had to settle for what I got on the Ft Chadbourne cavalry and re-enactors, I had hoped to intersperse the re-enactors with some rugged cactus & mesquite terrain and rough looking riverbed stuff. But constant thunderstorm and tornado watches got in the way.
Looking forward to seeing what others have done, that's almost as much fun as getting out and doing video
Gabriel Yeager May 15th, 2007, 08:09 PM If all goes as plan, I will be getting up way to early tomorrow and start filming! :)
Last night, after drinking lots of caffeinated beverages, I stayed up till 3 'o clock in the morning coming up with an idea. I wrote down a concept script (or whatever you would like to call it), and then woke up 4 hours later to start my day. Ahh, what I life! lol!
Can't wait to see the all of the entries.
~Gabriel
Per Johan Naesje May 16th, 2007, 06:13 PM As promised: here is a short footage of my Jib. This shot was taken during my trip to Trillemarka and uwol-3 production.
http://www.video-film.no/snutter/UWOL/jib.mov (2.8MB)
This rig is huge and heavy with additional 10kg weight to stabilize the camcorder up front. But I'm very pleased with the footage taken with the jib.
Enjoy!
Gabriel Yeager May 16th, 2007, 06:25 PM That looks like a nice rig Per. I can't wait to see some more footage from it. :)
I had some fun today. Got about 15 minutes of video.. And still not enough!
Good-luck everyone!
~Gabriel
Trond Saetre May 17th, 2007, 07:05 AM Nice rig, Per.
I'm lookng forward to see the video you shot when using it.
Is it hard to getting used to the jib, or do you find it easy?
Dale Guthormsen May 17th, 2007, 10:40 PM Per,
Nice rig, and i can already see some great uses for such a jig!! Ok another thing to add to the kit to get great shots!!!
curiously,
does the jib attach to your tripod or does it have its own independant pod???
I finished my uwol today and am compressing it as we speak. Problem is the fool things are never done!! have to let go at some point!!
Dale Guthormsen May 17th, 2007, 11:52 PM Well,
Thought i would share this with you all. I have been shooting with my broken tripod which was welded back together but is basicly toast!! I was looking at a libec and thinking of a vinten vision.
A few week ago I was talking to an aquaintence who did merlin research 20 years back. I told him of my fall and disaster with camera and tripod. He said he had an old tripod in the garage which they used for the merlin studies. anyway, I said dig it out and tell me what it is and i might be interested in it.
he phoned today to tell me it is a miller tripod with a fluid head. I have no idea what model, but it is bound to be better than my broken tripod!!!
It is coming down on the bus tomarrow and i am very curious to see what it is.
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 01:38 AM Nice rig, Per.
I'm lookng forward to see the video you shot when using it.
Is it hard to getting used to the jib, or do you find it easy?
The hardest thing is to carry this monster out in the wild ;-) It's double the weight of the tripod and camcorder.
To use the jib is easy though you must have an external monitor to view what you are recording. I use a Canon HV10 connected via composite as a monitor.
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 01:40 AM curiously,
does the jib attach to your tripod or does it have its own independant pod???
I attache the jib to my tripod via the quick release plate. Works great!

I use a Miller Arrow HD tripod/head, can't get any better IMO :-)
Go for it Dale, if it's function properly!
Oliver Reik May 18th, 2007, 02:13 AM It looks like Per Johan is very serious about winning this challenge... ;-)
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 03:11 AM Well, it's more about developing my own skill as a wildlifephotographer. Thanks to this community and especially the UWOL-Challenge which force me to go out in the wild ;-)
Mat Thompson May 18th, 2007, 04:23 AM Hey Per .....What camera is attached to your jib....its not the h1 is it !!??
If we see jumping Salmon in this entry I am going to be very amazed and very jealous :) !!
Mat Thompson May 18th, 2007, 04:27 AM WELL !! I made the biggest balls up yesterday! I full days shoot, a perfect weather window with low winds and my new F4 300mm !! and a low tide window, crucial for this subject. I hiked over 5 miles with 15kg+ on my back and thought YES this is going to be perfect.
....then realised I'd forgotton my EF adapter....DOH....needless to say some expleatives were used !
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 04:36 AM Hey Per .....What camera is attached to your jib....its not the h1 is it !!??Yes it's the H1, BTW it's well secured!
If we see jumping Salmon in this entry I am going to be very amazed and very jealous :) !!Hmmm... wait and see... ...and as you maybe know, we have Trolls here too ;-)
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 04:39 AM ....then realised I'd forgotton my EF adapter....DOH....needless to say some expleatives were used !Holy sh... man, do you not have a packing list before you leave!!!??? I can realize those expleatives used.... ;-)
Geir Inge May 18th, 2007, 04:43 AM Hmmm... wait and see... ...and as you mabe know, we have Trolls here too ;-)
It's been many years since I saw some trolls Per Johan, this I can't wait to see :) Does it look like this one in Lillehammer?
Kevin Railsback May 18th, 2007, 04:57 AM Mat, I feel for ya buddy! I was halfway to my destination when I realized I left all my P2 cards sitting on my desk. So, I had to go all the way back which cut down on my shooting time.
I now have a shot of a mushroom, a duck and a flower! Whoo Hoo!
Looks like I'll be getting up early tomorrow to see if I can get anything else or if it's in the tank for me. :(
Mat Thompson May 18th, 2007, 05:07 AM Ahhhh the lesser spotted norwegian salmon troll .....got ya ;)
Packing list....well not as such but I do usually count everything in and out of my pack/bag. Unfortunatley the new lens meant I left the ef adapter with the old lens.......I really was SO annoyed, the wind was vitually non-existant and there was plenty of light a situation that hasn't occured much here in the past few weeks.
The problem was I had a tidal window of only 2-3hrs and its a hard trek....I consider myself fairly 'hardcore ;) !' but adding another 10miles onto the day with that pack was just not happening. I'm thinking of using my mountain bike next time :)
Kevin .... mushrooms, ducks , flowers....sounds like a classic story to me ;)
Gabriel Yeager May 18th, 2007, 07:50 AM Well, I just got back this morning from day two of shooting. My Crane and I are starting to become good friends now. :-D
What a beautiful bird. It flys so nice...
Anyways, I went back this morning to the same lake I went to Wednesday. I am really starting to like that place!
Got my sunrise that I talked about in another thread. It turned out perfect. I was running out of tape at the end too! lol. I was watching it count down, then once it said I only had 2 minutes left, thats when I stopped it. :D Talk about perfect timing!
This time I left the tape rolling the hole time to make sure I got everything. Only stopped it to fix the shutter speed. Other then that I was just burning up tape!
It was a beautiful morning, it would have been spectacular if there were just a little bit more clouds!
I think I might be turning into a morning person -- for better or worse!
So I got there way earlier, but I think it was perfect 'cause it gave me plenty of time for setup.
And I think I am onto phase two of the challenge now. Uploading and editing. ;)
...flower!...
Oh! Thanks for saying that! lol! I forgot all about that part of my film... Dang-it, I need to find more tape!!
I think I will make it (If the lack of sleep does not get to me first)!!
Best wishes everyone!
~Gabriel
Gabriel Yeager May 18th, 2007, 07:51 AM It's been many years since I saw some trolls Per Johan, this I can't wait to see :) Does it look like this one in Lillehammer?
Haha, thats a funny statue Geir!
~Gabriel
Meryem Ersoz May 18th, 2007, 09:15 AM well, you have 30-something players here who feel your pain, mat! it's impossible to shoot video and not pull the bonehead play now and then. it's those little things that'll kill ya. how many times have i forgotten to check for the tripod plate in my lifetime?? nothing like carrying a 10 lb. doorstop on a miles-long hike....might as well stick a pile of rocks in my pack and call it "training...."
of course, for per and his jib and his big miller tripod, this is just a stroll in the sun!
i just love the back stories, y'all! you won't find these anywhere else on the web!
Dale Guthormsen May 18th, 2007, 09:16 AM Mat,
I sympathesize!!! you know, its a rule!!! When everything is gonna be right something happens!!!
whats the old saying, "making a list and checking it twice!"
A mountain bike sounds more reasonable to me!!!
A good horse can do wonders!!!
Bruce Foreman May 18th, 2007, 10:41 AM Kevin .... mushrooms, ducks , flowers....sounds like a classic story to me ;)
I can see it now in his entry:
Kevin in front of open oven...Mushroom sliced & diced...Ducks plucked...
...Staring at flower and muttering, "Whut the heck amigonna do with this?"
Mat Thompson May 18th, 2007, 01:14 PM LOL.....funny stuff !!
Dale Guthormsen May 18th, 2007, 10:48 PM Good evening,
I got the tripod today. It is definitely a miller. the sticks are in fact a wooden tripod, and I must confess the are one of the nicer set of wood legs I have seen.
the fluid head is totally consistant in it pan weight and its vertical movement. It is very smooth and does not retract at all when you stop your movement.
It is definitely old but substantially better than any tripod I have had my cameras on. I reckon it was worth a hundred fifty dollars.
It says Miller copyrighted F
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 11:12 PM Congrats Dale,
I think you done a real good deal, $150 that's nice :-) Looking forward to see steady pans with your 100-400mm.
Dale Guthormsen May 18th, 2007, 11:14 PM Per,
I posted a few flicks on the tripod threads to see if anyone knows what it actually is. Definitely not a new version.
Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007, 11:33 PM Have been looking at the pics, yes it's definitely an old model. But as long as you'll have steady shoots, no one asking which tripod used (except wildlifephotographers of course!) ;-)
Meryem Ersoz May 19th, 2007, 11:16 AM my tale of wonder is that i'm actually babysitting an uploading file, entitled MCE_UC3_TheGreenTara. i finally managed to put up an entry to uwolchallenge.com. yes! woo hoo! i'm so excited to finally have this system down to where i can participate (outside of the competition, of course, but in the game!)
it's kind of goofy, but i'm going through all of the participant pathways, (so when i'm done i have to go in the regular way and move my own file around....) just to see what you all go through.
and i have to say, it's pretty exciting, to get to the upload stage of things and to know that my modest little entry is going on to the site with everyone else's....
Geir Inge May 19th, 2007, 11:40 AM Congratulation on your entry Meryem.
There are some very exciting titles uploaded, cant wait to see them all :)
Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007, 12:12 PM Congrats Meryem on the video!
I just finished editing my entry. Now I have to make the music, export, and upload, then I am good.
I have to admit, this is probably my worst film yet.
Sorry everyone if you watch my video, you might want to cry. lol!
Running out of time, locations, and most of all, energy...
For those of you who saw my first film, "Duck, the Snow Falleth," prepare to see part two! lol... :(
Hopefully with a decent soundtrack, I'll be able to make it less boring for y'all -- Sorry.
Heres a few things that I learned during this time; I dislike editing -- I hate Imovie more, Auto-focus can ruin your best footage, waking up really early and getting minimal sleep four days in a row starts to really get to ya in the 5th day, and caffeine is a life saver. :)
I can't wait to see everyones submissions!
~Gabriel
Meryem Ersoz May 19th, 2007, 12:20 PM gabriel, here's a tip:
mine is clocking in at around 2:15. if you think you're lacking material, better to make it shorter and more interesting than to stretch it to a lower quality 3 minutes. remember, these are maximums. there is no minimum....
