View Full Version : Safety glass v. Safety mesh

I am slowing assembly a light kit from the used lighting market. Unfortunately, none of the lights I have purchased have the safety glass or mesh included. I have ordered the safety glass for a couple of the lights but I am wondering if there are advantages/disadvantages of glass over wire mesh (or are both to be used at the same time?).

I would think the mesh would cut down the light a modest amount.

Would it be possible to construct your own of either kind? Would the local glass shop have the right type of glass?

Thanks

Curt

Mesh is light and cheap and does not break if you tip the light stand over. I doubt your neigbourhood glass shop has the right kind of heat resistant glass (Pyrex?) which would stand the heat. With wrong material you would just make matters worse, more flying glass...

Light loss with mesh is neglible, maybe a 1 or 2%, difficult even to measure.
