Just a thought, but how about an experiment? How about no sign-up, just submit it if you get one done. Dylan is thinking about that for the DV Challange.

Scheduling conflicts and weather can make planning a month ahead very difficult.

Just a thought-----Mike

I like that idea. Just submit it if you have one to submit. In the meantime, sign me up. I don't think I can get one done for the DV challenge - but the UWOL suits my style well enough to at least give it a shot.

Count me in!

It will be really tough with all the other things I have scheduled in May, but UWOL2 was so fun that I just have to give it a try.

By the way, I like Mike's idea.

Me too :)

Mike

The idea of the sign up I guess is to try and get people to complete there entry and avoid the dreaded shark tank. It certainly gives me a kick up the bum to think....'no I signed up, I've got to complete this'! I do know what you mean though...

Meryem,

I personally like the idea of the sign up.
1. it pressures me to do the job
2. it shows commitment
3. I have great respect for those who say what they will do, and do what they say!!!!
4. it is far better than doing something on a whim
5. It shows the people are serious about the challange and a commitment to improve every time to be more competitive.

Even if it is, it just means more "sneaking" is involved. :-) My camera only has a x20, I think you could live with the x16 or whatever it is that the gl1 has. ;)
Use bushes and trees to your advantage. Or if you don't have those, hide behind boulders and stay low. I think it makes things more interesting....

These are some very good words Dale. Very nice!

I just wonder: Is there gonna be a Uwol#4 in July?

Many people are on holiday with their kids/family.
I dont even dare to think about, what my wife will do if I'm using our holiday for filming :)
Any feedback on this?

Geir,

This is the time a lot of people will actually have time to get out and do a great job of it!!

If on holidays it gives you an opportunity to shoot in a new location.

Also is a time of year for other topics that are not available in winter or off seasons.

Very true.
And we should also remember that when we have summer here in the northern half of the world, then they have winter down south.
Not everyone has summer/winter vacation at the same time of year.

Ay,ay, I got the picture and agreed :)
My thoughts where if we're able to edit and send in our contributions if we're on holiday? But then again we live in different countries and holiday may not be likewise for everyone.

That's why it is called uwol CHALLENGE, haha.
Well, hopefully we will all be able to make a video for UWOL4 when that time comes, holiday season or not.
Who knows, maybe the theme will be vacation...

Dale, you have some good, strong points there. I didn't think of it this way when I first said I supported Mike's idea about not signing up.
I especially like the nr 5.

But still I can see some good things about Mike's idea. People who are "sitting on the fence", not signing up because they maybe have other things scheduled, might be able to deliver a finished video anyway.

for those who may be of the fence about signing up.

please sign on and go for it.

I personally have found the first two have made me much more attentive to the small stuff.

the constructive criticism has been gentle and extremely helpful.

I figure in another half a dozen i might actually give the guys a run for their money.

In the mean time it is fun and a great experience.

How can you do anything but improve and have greater respect for those that do jush great work!!

Yes, I agree with you Dale. I learned a lot from UWOL2, and I plan to attend as many future challenges as I can. Hopefully all of them.

I wouldn't dare miss out on number three so count me in one more time. Now the exciting part...due to the filming taking place in May I plan to surprise everyone by using snow and some bare rocks as my feature backdrop rather than just snow....mind you I have my fingers crossed that rocks will be sticking through in places.

Last weekend I spent three days locked in my cabin due to a blizzard. Damn you just have to love the Arctic.

Hello Per:

I'll do my best to show a few of those rocks...however I make no promise. Per I have the title already "Hypothermia Vs Sun Stroke" a study in survival at the beach LOL

No matter what it will be fun to compete again....

Yiiiiik ;-)

If this is true, maybe I'll finally get my chance showing off. I've been joking with Meryem about bying me a wetsuit, but it is now longer a joke. My wetsuit is "hiding" in a closet in our basement. It was very expensive and my wife.... Well, I think she know me by now :) But I have to use my Panasonic DVX100 camera though, in case we're going "under water". And I also got me an adapter for my XLH1 Per, but cant compete with your lenses, yet.

good morning signer-uppers.

i'm finally getting myself back together. got some amazing footage. amazing!

geir, i'd hang onto that wet suit. maybe not for this month, but the warmer weather is approaching fast. and that's all i'm saying!

re: mike's suggestion....

the number one reason that i decided to develop the UWOL Challenge was to build a stronger community among nature and outdoors shooters. i would even go so far as to say that is my sole reason for inventing it. the sign-up process is part of the getting-to-know-you. it's the small talk that precedes the Big Dance (when we post feedback threads and choose a winner).

if the goal was to produce footage, i'd be on board with the "anyone plays" mentality. but that goal is sort of secondary--those who produce and post footage at DVinfo will continue to do so, with or without the UWOL Challenge. but with the UWOL Challenge, they get to make new friends while they're at it. i think the UWOL feedback is visibly better than what you get if you're just posting footage at DVinfo, because it is coming from people who have tried the same theme you have, from people who have been working alongside you for 3 weeks, engaged in similar struggles.

sign-ups give new players a chance to see who is out there, to become familiar with other players, and to feel involved, not just like some free range chicken poking around in the dirt alone. once you sign up (and complete your project, ahem!), you're instantly part of a very unique--and did i mention supportive?-- community. there is nothing available like it anywhere else on (or off) the web...except for the DV Challenge on which it was modeled (props to Dylan for the inspiration).

not to get off-topic--this is the sign-up thread and it's for signing up, not feeding back. but since it seems to be a persistent conversation, i thought i'd throw in my bit...

PS--Don't forget to shoot me an e-mail at the new address below, if you haven't already! (Even previous players need to do it, this round only....)

Hi all,
Been watching this initiative with interest for a while now and thought I would take the plunge and have a go. I shoot on an FX1, have a love of nature instilled from a very young age by my parents, and love the outdoors and extreme sports ( filming AND participating ). Hopefully i'll be able to cobble something together to match the excellent quality of productions you all have put together over the last two rounds!

Cheers!

Rob
