Looking for a cover for my A1 that will be good for resisting rain, water spray, moisture, dirt, dust...and other unwanted nasties. Not looking for something that handles a dunk in the ocean..but just something to fend off the elements. If it makes any difference...i use the camera a lot for documentaries in third world countries (africa, central america, russia, etc..) so the cover needs to be rugged and very user friendly for run-n-gun style shooting. (ie...i need to be able to get to all the controls easily)

I use the Kata rain cover that I purchased for my Sony Z1 and it fits perfect on my Canon A1.

I have the Kata. Portabrace seems hard to beat quality-wise but it fits like a glove and I have accessories attached to my A1 like a senny LAV receiver etc...

I like the extra room of the Kata since I add a silver covered bubble to keep it cool in the sun.

Could you give me a model number or something for the kata rain cover. I went to their web site and it seems like they only listed convers for SLRs.

I bought the P-CUB1N Petrol bag from B&H, and it came with a free rain cover. I haven't used it yet, but you can probably find it at B&H or on the Petrol web site if you want to check it out too. That Ewa Marine stuff is nice too, a little more protection for the lens.

I tried a portabrace for my GL2 years ago and I didn't like it because it seemed like there were enough holes for water to *wick* into and get to the camera. I really wanted something that could handle sudden pouring rain. I ended up using a home made slicker using freezer bags...but now with my A1 I'm considering the Kata route.

I got the Kata Cover with the Petrol bag. I personally think the Kata cover was intended for the Sony Camera where the LCD is higher and further forward. I wouldn't say the Kata cover fits like a glove. It's okay and seems to work, there's lots of zippers etc. so you can get your hand in for controls, but I can defnitely see lots of room for design improvements.

FYI I used it in the dominican republic on the beach.

Also, you'll need to go to the website photos to figure out how to use it.

Dave you must have a different cover. Mine Kata only has velcro on the bottom with removable covers at each end. The end covers are also velcro and work great when shot gun mikes is needed or attachments. The one for the eye cup I never seem to use. There is also a pull cord (shock cord) at the lens which needs to be tucked in after pulled to stop noise and swinging by the lens.

But you are right it is a loose fit which I seem to like.

The Kata for the A1 is the CRC-14. They are universal and made for several cams but this is the one listed for the A1.

I think when you use a rain cover you would do best viewing through the eyecup and not the screen. Not a rule just my opinion.

I agree Johathan I always use the viewfinder when shooting with the cover. CR-15 also works if you have one already. I will try the CR-14 for my second A1.

I bought a Kata CRC-14 so I could protect my cam from the drizzels of Florida when filming. Used it once and its pretty nice. The front fit is a little tight to slide over the lens hood quickingly but can be done. You can use the LCD as well but keep it mind it pretty much stops you from sealing the bottom if you wanted to. Here are some pics. Only thing I am not too happy about is that the top opens up with velcro. While this allows for some accesories and such it also leaves a long line for water to come in at. It does seem to steal up pretty well and does have an overhang to where if the camera is is positioned with the top up it should not leak.
