Home Depot is giving away 1,000,000 CFL bulbs on earth day, according to their website. This could be an illuminating experience.

When they give them away, the quality may be lower. Like the time you reported the bulbs had a buzz or hum. Also, i'd be willing to be they'll be either 2700K or 6500K as those are "commodity" color temperatures that all factories in China pump out in huge quantities.

I also don't think they are super high quailty but free is free.
