My assumption is that it goes to line, but the level seems low. Yet when I plug it into mic it seems too high.

I'm referring to a minidisk recorder and also HC1 camcorder.

You don't give enough details of the mic you are using. My Lectrosonics have adjustments on the outputs which can swing the output from mic to line. Also you don't say what connections you are using going to the mini disc recorder but a switchable pad could lower the mics output even further to match up with the decks you are using
