Thanks for the info. But what is Panasonic doing? Same bit rates and same low-res CCD chips, but now the capture res is up to 1920x1080 instead of 1440x1080.

So what is point of this? Other than giving us yet more macro-blocking compression artifacts???

The picture quality of these camcorders will be much better than the ones it’s replacing.

As some people are wondering, will Panasonic also replace the AG-HSC1U? The color reproduction of that camcorder is very good and combine it with the newer H.264 codec LSI and you almost have yourself a winner. I’ll consider it a winner if Panasonic decides to add a focusing ring around the lens.

I was looking at the specs of both the SD1 and SD3 the other day and had a chuckle. The "1920" seems to be the only thing different. Even the dimensions and weight are the same. That seems to indicate they neither added nor removed anything for consumers' benefit.

At the end of the day, isn't this basically just a firmware upgrade??

The resolution is the same. The difference is only in the pixel aspect ratio -- 1440x1080 is 1.333; 1920x1080 is 1.000. (Multiply 1440 by 1.333 and see what you get.)

It’s amazing how Panasonic is offering a 0.7X wide angle lens for this. I hope it’s decent.
