I am about to order a A1 once it gets in stock ... Meanwhile I took the opportunity to look around what else they've got I might need. I came across a filter package Canon FS72U containing a ND8, UV and a circular polarized 72mm filters at 155 euros.

Which filters do you use?

I found another thread regarding circular vs linear polarized filters, but I assume that if Canon make circular polarized filters then that's the one to get. Is that right?

I have that pack for my XL1-S. I only use the CP. It's good. Canon's built in ND is better than the ND8, provided you are savvy with exposure settings.

I also use a lot of colored grads, nd grads, and Tiffen soft filters.

I never used the UV filter. They are more for protection..and I live on the edge.

Great, I think I chicken out and use the UV filter. You say the A1 has built in ND - are you thinking about gain or iris?

My interest in the ND8 is that I have an idea of a shot of the sun at full zoom - so it appear large - and I'd hate to fry the CCDs. The ND8 should take another 6 f-stops I understand. Or did I misunderstand something here? What do you suggest for such a shot?

yeah, if you are shooting the sun..directly into the sun..
use an nd.

I shoot sunrises and sunsets quite often, very zoomed..no ND at all.
If it's overcast, I will use a red or tobacco grad.
Just look at the light meter on the cam. I've never fried a ccd.

This isn't a suggestion..but my work experience has told me that
if you can look at the sun without it being too harsh on your eyes,
the same would go for the cam.

I firmly believe UV filters are a global scam perpetrated by the glass industry.

hey Erik, The A1 does have a built in 1/6 and 1/32 ND filter that is an actual lense mechanism and not some kind of electorinic de-amplification.
