You can grind off the back tabs on a rode shock mount to fit the canon shoe with a non-canon mic. Like a sennheiser me66, for example. It may or may not damage the port internals for the canon mic but since I'm not going to use the canon mic I'm not worried about it, but if you've bought the canon mic or planning on reselling . . . be careful.
