This desk top disk drive uses the same media, and it would be very handy if it could transfer XDcam HD files to an NLE.

No, it can not be used for XDCAM. Have been reading it somewhere in Sony's FAQ brochures.

These ProDisc drives are for data disc only. That said, Sony will introduce at NAB a similar USB2 drive that will read/write XDCAM and XDCAM HD discs.

That's good news! I've noticed that they already have a desk top unit for XDcam-SD, and an HD version would likely accelerate the use of the format amongst smaller production companies. Bring it on!
