I shot this with my Sony HDR-HC3 with my Sigma 180 lens set up . It is a little shakey because it was windy and I was shooting on a tiny beanbag.

Hi Joey,

Excellent subjects you have there! The mag rate in #1 is excellent but the DOF is lacking. What aperture were you using here? I would stop down a little and add some light if possible to lift the picture up a little.

The action in #2 is good but the mag rates are a little small (as you have mentioned). The subject is also a tad too centred in almost all the compositions. Try to get it off-center with looking/breathing space for it.

the footage on the house fly was really crystal!! Yeo is right about the depth of field, particularly on the spider. The cadis fly was not nearly as clear and i would have like to see it better.

As they say, practice makes perfect!!! I enjoyed the clip, thank you for sharing it.

I find I get so focused on the image i often forget about basic composition principles!!! eg. composition of 1/3's, directional space and so forth.

Im not sure how I can get more DOF , My camera doesn't have any manual control of Shutter speed or apature. I have tried to stop down the SLR lens Im putting infront but then the corners get dark. I think I may need to get a better camera with manual controls.

Joey,

If that is the case, either get a camera with manual controls OR add light to the scene. The camera will automatically close the iris down a little thus you have increased DOF.

Wow, my kids loved it. I think I'd like to try and film a few bugs too. There's a woods and a pond behind our house. What do I need to get started if I have a sonyvx1000 and a canon hv20? And where's a good place to buy it?

Use your HV-20 so I can check out the footage. You can just use the minimum focus distance and get really close or a macro mode if your camera has it. Or if you have some SLR len's you play with those. If you have a 50mm you can reverse it .
