View Full Version : Backing up with G-Raid...query...

Soon to make a purchase on a gtech graid drive: I need to extra drive space plus I'm soon to begin shooting HDV (via the Firewire 800) which is possibly the best way for my iMac to cope.
I was going to get hold of the 500gb version but have found a 1Tb version for what I consider a very good price (£420...other companies are charging at least £700- £770 for the same machine).

Little bit unsure as to the best way to organise this drive with my mac set up:
I'm told this drive should be striped and I presume as default i.e. I won't have to set up/tell the mac to split the drive?
But I'm now also thinking of having my FCP et al mirrored? I don't suppose (you can probably tell I was never a computer geek and I'm fairly new to mac land also!) I could mirror along the same lines as the striped disk? If not, may it be wiser to get hold of two smaller g-raid drives, have one striped whilst mirroring with the 2nd drive?
And is it a case of moving the FCP progamme (and it's associated files) from the current internal drive to the new external drive/s?

Curious as to how you folks deal with backing up...I've shot quite a few hours of footage of late and my hard drive has desperately sunk - I will probably burn to disk the numerous 'self contained movies' as these also take up a lot of space (client required hundreds of small clips rather than raw footage/edited sequences).

Apologies if this is more of a Mac forum question and slightly out of the digital video jurisdiction (I'll stick a post on that forum just in case).

Many thanks.

Apoliges for draging this one back up but I'm fast running out of hard drive space and will therefore need to acquire a new drive pretty quickly.
Do most of you folks mirror your drive for safety? Does anyone on here use the Graid who could perhaps advise me on setting this up (striping and where to place FCP etc)?
Many thanks.
