I have a sony hc-1. The built in mic has a good stero image for a built in camcorder mic. However it is very suseptible to wind noise. It seems very hard to remove wind noise in post (I use Vegas to edit). I will be shooting outdoor in continuously windy conditions next month. I will mostly be interested in picking up good male/female voices. Is there a good stero mic setup that I can use? The HC-1 has a min mic jack - no XLR. I know I can get a beachtek for XLR input, xlr mics, etc., but what setup/mics works best in these conditions (without spending thousands)? If there is a good mic (with good wind suppression/muff) that uses the min plug that would be fine and probably cheaper. Thanks for any ideas/input - PK

Paul,

I own a Sony A1 - so I usually use the XLR adaptor with several different fairly decent microphones, but I recently purchased a Rode Stereo Video Mic for when I require stereo - and I am very impressed. It comes with a Rode dead cat wind muff which works well to suppress wind noise and uses a stereo mini jack to plug into the camera. The only problem you might have is mounting on a HC1 as I believe that they do not have a cold shoe, but there are third party adaptors that can do this if I recall correctly. Another you might consider if you want mono is the Rode Video mic, and buy a Dead Cat muff to go on it - this is less expensive. Others on this forum have given the video mic good reviews - and it seems untouchable in its price bracket.

Hope this helps,

Funny you mention the Rhonde Stereo Video mic, as that is the one I was looking at on the B&H web site. Glad to hear you've had good luck with it and it does well in windy conditions with the included mic muff. It is true that the HC-1 only has the proprietary Sony hot shoe, but I have a bracket with a standard shoe on it that I can use. Thank you very much for the feed back. Sincerely - PK
