I'm trying to help a freind edit a project and a lot of the audio is too hot, over modulated, sounds like crap.

I'm not looking for a lesson in correctly recording audio, I am hoping that someone knows of a filter or technique for taking the edge off and hopfully making it sound a bit better.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but as my old computer professor used to say: "Garbage In, Garbage Out".

Once audio is mangled, you're not really going to improve it.

You have two choices - try to have the subjects overdub the audio (not easy and usually doesn't work unless they and you know what you're doing) or reshoot the vid.

Try the "Now Hear This" forum. There are many ways to improve crappy sound, and a certain filter might just help.

It won't be perfect, but improvements can always be made.
