Does anyone have any suggestions to boost the light settings of the HVX, so that I may shoot Gymnast without using lights. Should I use cine v or d or another setting?

Use the Bpress setting and turn the knee off. Additionally set the master ped to somewhere between -3 and -7 this will give you some contrast to work with later. If this is still too flat and you absolutely must....add 6db of gain. The HVX is not really an ENG/event type camera, never will be, if this doesn't help use something else.

Paul,
I'm sorry but i don't understand why the previous person suggested crushing the blacks as that will make the scene darker.

Cine Gamma lowers your overall sensitivity so it would have the opposite affect from what you seem to want.

I find that a normal set-up in most situations is ideal. HD Gamma with pedastel set up @ - 4 or -5 and either Cine Matrix @ 0 or Normal Matrix with some kind of + setting 0- +2 until you like the saturation level. If it feels too dingy or contrasty, try raising the Gamma by going to SD Norm or even High to bring up detail in the mid ranges, but that might flatten the picture so you could compensate by dropping the Ped.

Be careful with the knee as you may have very bright windows in a gym. I don't know why he suggested turning the knee off. This is dangerous unless you know what your doing. Auto is probably fine.

Basically though, there is no magic fix. If its too dark you'll need gain.
I often use a slower shutter speed to increase exposure, but that may produce more blur than you want for gymnasts.
