Hi, I'm trying to use my A1 to digitize footage from a beta deck. The beta deck only has BNC out for the Video and XLR out for the Audio. Is there any way to record XLR audio input and Video 2?

When I tried, I got video, but no audio.

I might be wrong on this since i don t own a A1. But i do know that if you got a DV cam (i own a GL2) you will plug your BNC out from the Beta into the RCA IN (yellow) for the video (assuming you have a BNC to RCA converter) and you could send the sound signal from the XLR into the RCA stereo (white and red:stereo...) with a XLR to RCA converter. You could even get a XLR to 1/4 jack converter and add a 1/4 to RCA stereo.

Then, you just make sure your camera is set to "DV IN" and you can digitize the signal.

Of course you will only get a SD signal.

You should be able to go XLR to XLR for audio, but the A1 doesn't have a BNC input, only output. I don't have all those cables handy that came with the camera, but I believe there's an RCA-to-AV cable. You can get a BNC-to-RCA adapter (even at Radio Shack) for the Betacam deck and that should take care of it. Unless plugging in that AV cable to the yellow port negates the XLRs. If it does, I believe the RCA end of the AV cable has audio inputs too. If that's the case you'll need two XLR-to-RCA adapters, of the correct sex.

Actually, the A1 does do BNC analog input. It's pretty handy and VERY good quality. Much better than the "datavideo" analog to digital recorder box that I have sitting on my desk right now. The easiest thing to do would be to just convert all the signals to RCA, but I don't have the proper cables for that.

So that BNC port is an input as well as an output? I didn't know you could do that.

Audio I/O in VCR mode is normally on the 3-pole mini-jack (composite) socket, even if the video is going via the componant port. I think the same is true when using the BNC video port. You'll need XLR - RCA converters to attach to the RCA/3-pole mini-jack lead supplied with the camera.

I don't have it to hand, but I don't recall anything in the manual indicating that the XLR sockets can be used in VCR mode, but I may have missed it.
