View Full Version : Canon XHA1 vs. HV10 zoom range
Holly Rognan February 2nd, 2007, 03:11 PM Just for those interested. I compared the range on the lens for both of the camcorders. I set the A1 to read out zoom in numbers and I zoomed in until I was wide as the HV10 on the widest setting and got about 20. I then zoomed in the HV10 and matched the A1 and got 95.
So essentially, the Hv10 has almost as much reach as the A1, but not even close to being as wide. The range comparison is 20-95.
I dont know if this is useful to anyone.
Chris Hurd February 2nd, 2007, 03:20 PM Actually it's very useful. Thanks a bunch Holly,

Hmm, that doesn't seem right. The 35mm equivalents for the two cameras in 16:9 mode are:
HV10: 43.6-436mm
XH-A1: 32.5-650mm
That extra 200mm on the A1 should give it noticeable more reach than the HV10. Maybe the zoom scale isn't linear?
Holly Rognan February 2nd, 2007, 05:05 PM I don't think it is linear, probably curvelinear. For example, a '50' doesn't mean you are half way through the range.
Chris Hurd February 2nd, 2007, 05:24 PM The zoom scale is definitely NOT rectilinear on any of these camcorders.

But there is a 1.7 X tele available out there. . .that will increase the range. . .
Chris Hurd February 2nd, 2007, 09:35 PM There's a 0.7x wide converter as well, which increases the range in the other direction.

For the HV10 or A1?
Mike Horrigan February 3rd, 2007, 08:05 AM There is a 1.7x magnification (the TL43) and a .7x Wide (WD43) for the HV20.
Not sure about the HV10.
Mike

Brad Vaughan February 3rd, 2007, 09:45 AM Thanks Chris.
How about a Macro lens for the HV10?
Are there any out there that will work even though they are not specifically designed for the HV10?
Chris Hurd February 3rd, 2007, 09:53 AM Any 37mm attachment will work (if you can find that size, otherwise use step-down or step-up rings), providing that the glass resolves for HD. As always, you get what you pay for (avoid cheap stuff).
Brad Vaughan February 3rd, 2007, 01:15 PM Roger that. I learned that lesson last week when I bought a cheap 2x Telephoto lens from BestBuy...awful awful IQ.
Thanks again you Generous Guru of DVi.net!!
