Was I've looked into dozens of portable 7" monitor these few last days and they all seem to have weird resolutions like 1440*240 or something like that. I was wondering if anybody know if there actually is such a thing as a 7" 720*576 monitor out there? I'm so desperate that I even started looking into some DVD players to see if they met these specifications.

Oh, and apart from this mains problem. None seems to have a compatible video input . All monitors and dvd players I check have only an AV IN mini jack input, and the Canon A1 ouputs RCA, BNC, FIREWIRE, COMPONENT (and with an adapter it could output S-VIDEO). Actually the A1's RCA output is RCA in one side and AV mini jack in the other side (the side that comes out of the A1's body), but I couldn't find any cables that are AV mini jack in and out.

I was hopping not having to spend MUCH more than 200 EUROS.

I think the answer is no.
Probably because video isn't displayed at 720x576 anyway.
SD 4:3 PAL is displayed at 787x576 and SD 16:9 PAL is 1049x576.

The video itself always contains 720x576 pixels but they're not square pixels. The pixel aspect ratio is changed between 4:3 and 16:9 however LCD screens only use square pixels so to get the display res you have to multiply the video res by the PAR of 1.0926 for 4:3 or 1.4568 for 16:9.

So, what would be the closest I could get?

Wolfgang, have you tried just one battery pack on the LCD screen? I find most of these LCD panels work fine off of the typical 7.4v coming out of camcorder batteries (much to my amazement). I powered mine for a while with JVC batteries.

Yes, but this monitor works only correct from 9,5 - 14V.

Do you need 720x576 specifically? What video outputs do you want to use? Here's an ikan with 800x600:

How much portability do you need? I don't think any of these monitors will help with focus if thats what you are looking for. You're gonna need to pay over $1000 US for a decent monitor to pull focus with.

If that isn't an option. Get an LCD with sharpness adjustment. Crank the sharpness up to max. I use a cheap LCD for legal depositions and I found that if you up the sharpness and train your eye you can get decent focus on a cheap LCD. It is similar to the peaking function (not as good, but similar) on the XH-A1.

What about this one for the XH-A1? It is a portable PC monitor 1024 x 768 but I don't know if the RCA input will give you that resolution.

Isn't 1024X768 a square (4:3) resolution? That LCD looks widescreen. I'm pretty sure those specs aren't accurate.

this is not the native pixel resolution.... 7 Zoll 16:9 has max. 800x480 pixel, the most 7 Zoll LCDs have the same electronic from china inside. 1024x768 is only for VGA Input, this resolution is downsample to 800x480.....

800 red + 800 blue + 800 green = 2.400 Pixel

2.400 x 480 = 1.152.000 Pixel = 1.2 Megapixel

There are not that many DVD players with video input. Mine is a Philips PET-1000, which is quite good. It does have a composite video input, but as you may see on my recent thread it has its own problems too.

For quality viewing you will need at least S-video connection, which is not rare in portable monitors. Component video is, and only the more expensive have it. But I think the S-video should be fine, if the monitor has good resolution. This you should try.

Not being able to try it was the reason why I didn't buy a Xenarc in 2005, so I got a generic model from B&H, then called TV-One.

Today I connected my Sony Z1 for the first time to it, and to my surprise the image was inferior to the one I got from the Philips PET-1000 DVD player. Which in turn provided better image when fed from my Sony PDX10. So go explain that!

But the Philips should provide what I want now, which is monitoring my frame while interviewing, having a cameraman or not to do it. On the first case to check what he/she is doing; on the second to check if the interviewee framing needs some correction.

The bad news last. I don't think you will find anything decent for that kind of money. Only to check the framing and not much more than that.
