I don't understand what "coring" is or does either. I just followed a tip in another thread that it could reduce the noise associated with higher gain settings, at the expense of a "softer" image, which I assume means that it may look a little less well-focused. The impression I get is that if you just use a little bit of extra gain and a little bit of noise reduction you'll get nice pictures. If the weather's OK in my part of England at the weekend, I'll go out again and do some more experiments.

Coring slightly blurs areas of same or similar color, as a way of reducing noise - it sort of smooths out patches of color. For example, a little coring on a closeup in low light helps to smooth out noise on a person's face without making the entire image look soft.

As with any of these features, the best way to determine how they work is with your own eyes - play around with them and see.

Coring is a custom preset option that has been available on Canon camcorders for several years now, starting with the Canon XL2 back in 2004. Therefore, it follows that the subject of "coring" has been discussed on this site before. You need only to search through the XL2 and XL H1 boards to find the answers to your questions about coring. I just did a search and found several threads which discuss the coring function:
