Brian Rhodes February 7th, 2007, 06:05 PM HVR-V1U 24P CLIP http://www.dvdaction.net/index_007.htm Gerald Baillgergeau February 26th, 2007, 11:14 AM I got my V1 about a month ago. Last weekend i finally got a chance to get a couple of friends together and we shot a test short. No real set-ups just run & gun shots.. 5 hours tops.. Feel free to download the file "v1test".. @ tracklightent.com/movies.(please right click & download linked file) See for yourself how the V1 performs. There are some high contrast, low light grain, hand held movement & some sudo camera stabilizer shots. I figured just shooting passing cars & trees wasn't gonna be enough to see what I'd be in for when I try to do something serious. No CC was done.. the camera was set on 24pA manual mode. Footage was captured with the workflow stated in this forum.(AIC, Cinema Tools, etc) Hope to do more interior test soon.. Michael Mcintyre March 1st, 2007, 04:28 AM Thanks for the link! Footage looks good. I'm surprised there hasn't been more V1U footage around but this is a great look. Marcus Marchesseault March 1st, 2007, 10:36 PM That's some fancy test footage! If I didn't own a V1 myself, I wouldn't believe that clip didn't have color correction. The V1 is amazing in the way it handles saturated colors without losing detail or tinting everything oddly. The only problem is that the footage was stretched vertically on my machine. I forced 16:9 playback and it looked fine, so it must just be a matter of the aspect flag not being set correctly by the software. I stopped the video in a several places and found compression artifacts, but they weren't noticeable during playback. I think the talk of HDV having too many compression artifacts are unfounded. The artifacts mostly happen in ways that the human eye can't perceive. Macroblocking in a single frame of a fast-moving blurred object are something I can live with. Thanks for the footage! Robert Ducon March 2nd, 2007, 02:55 AM That just proved to me that HDV isn't as bad as many make it out to be. (I've shot a lot of footage on the Z1U.) Show that clip to most average joes on a TV monitor, and they'd figure it could be a clip from a real film or pro documentary-style show. The colours were fantastic, the exposure was as good as you can expect from something that frantic and hand-held, and the codec looked fine at full motion. It's hard to spot artifacts when it's playing back (which is what HDV was made for). And this was all while playing on a fast LCD computer monitor. THEN I played it on my broadcast monitor. Mmm.. the colours were beautiful. The sharpness was great. I wouldn't have guessed it was shot with a 1/4 HDV camera, no way. That camera pulled through very well - glad you shared! Nice camera, nice work. In that lit of conditions, it matches or beats the Z1U in my opinion. I'd buy it over the Z1U - there was far less grain in the darker areas in the stills. Evan C. King March 2nd, 2007, 06:32 AM It looked really good! It had the world's fakest punches but did look really good. One question I have is since there's no cc how come some shots have a really nice punchy orange-ish colour to them and others have a colder blue cast? Was this an active choice? And how did you personally like the 24p of the camera did it seem "perfect" to you? Gerald Baillgergeau March 2nd, 2007, 01:43 PM It looked really good! It had the world's fakest punches but did look really good. One question I have is since there's no cc how come some shots have a really nice punchy orange-ish colour to them and others have a colder blue cast? Was this an active choice? And how did you personally like the 24p of the camera did it seem "perfect" to you? LOL .. We're still laughing about those punches ourselves.. As for the different coloring, I was adjusting the setting on the outdoor white balance to get warmer or cooler. As the the light conditions changed, i'd dial in different settings for experimentation sake. The 24p on the V1, to me, works beautifully. I had to get use to the sharpness & clarity of the images in 24p compared to other stuff I've shot with other SD cameras. Overall, I'm very pleased with the V1. It's not "perfect" but what camera is? There's a lot you can do to achieve a desired look. I was a little worried at first when I bought it because of all the talk of aliasing, mosaic purple edges, etc. I'm not to knowledgeable in the science & technology of HDV... I jus know what looks good & the V1 is alright with me.. Happy I took the plunge.. Nathan Pawluck May 30th, 2007, 11:50 AM Some footage of my town http://www.virb.com/434568698334385/videos/11221 Alexander Browne June 1st, 2007, 03:42 AM good exposure control on some of those shots, shows great looking dynamic range. Have to love magic hour Stu Holmes June 1st, 2007, 07:12 AM Nicely done Nathan. Been to Salmon Arm myself, on a drive from Van to Banff. My question: what WA lens are you using?. The "cam lying between railway tracks" shot looks particularly wideangle. thanks Nathan Pawluck June 1st, 2007, 10:29 AM i was shooting the camera with no extra Stuff (stalk). I plan on getting a Letus35 Flip Enhanced, indirails and indifocus. The footage wasn't shoot in Salmon Arm but Sexsmith alberta. http://www.indifocus.com/ http://www.letus35.com/ Chris Hull July 25th, 2007, 03:52 PM some shots of some film i did around the new forest for anyone thinking of purchasing a fx-7.i dont have a web site at the moment sorry i know megaupload can be a pain but its all i can use for now http://www.megaupload.com/?d=04OOJOVR on another point i have used a rode stereo mike with my fx-7 and found it great far better than the on board and the volume setting never needed adjusting till last week when i filmed a village fair i always film, most was ok exept for brass and bag pipe bands, the resulting sound was terrible even reducing volume in pc crazed etc clearly i should have reduced the sound level.although last year filming with my hc-1 and a ecm-hqp1 mike the sound was great without altering the volume.below is a clip of the fair with rubbish sound clearly i must reduce volume for bands like this am i correct.chris http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NN0I6ZL2 Zsolt Gordos July 31st, 2007, 04:31 PM Hi, some bird clips taken in Asia. http://files.filefront.com//;8194236;;/ http://files.filefront.com//;8194227;;/ http://files.filefront.com//;8194234;;/ Brian S. Nelson August 8th, 2007, 04:29 PM Here are some V1U clips of (small skittish) birds. Most were made at 60i using the 1.5X digital zoom and a 1.5X tele-converter (16x9). Some of the clips were 30p to begin with. All but one clip was scaled to 640x360 using Compressor. One clip was scaled to both 640x360 and 1280x720. http://homepage.mac.com/bsnelson/birdvideos/birdvideos.html John Huebbe August 18th, 2007, 09:06 PM So... I finally got around to encoding a HD version of my latest video and uploading it to the web. The previous videos that I've released have all been low-rez 480x270 web quality. You can download the video from http://www.archive.org/details/321GoVideo_NEFR2007_S.Verdier After shooting with the V1U's for about 5 months now, both Mark and I decided that we made the right choice. :) We had to change our shooting style just a few times (in minor ways) due to the limits of the camera (like rolling shutter), but so far it hasn't changed much going from our PD170's that we use to have. Now the only thing I wish is a better in-car camera. A 520 line bullet cam just doesn't cut it anymore. Sergio Barbosa August 21st, 2007, 07:57 AM Looks really good John...from camera work to editing. I'm curious to know specifically what you had to change in your way of shooting, because of the camera. The in-car camera really doesn't fit ;) John Huebbe August 21st, 2007, 04:50 PM The big thing is the rolling shutter. Shooting close to trees and doing a quick pan is not a good thing. The trees look slanted. Also if a flash bulb goes off it does not fill the frame. Only parts of it (and in odd shapes). Focus is another thing. Doing interviews can be a hassle. On the small LCD it might look in focus, but on the big screen it is not. The dynamic range of the camera also is better. I seem to be able to get shots that I never could with my PD170. Marcus Marchesseault August 29th, 2007, 05:07 AM Baby horses! You can't go wrong with cute animals. That's a nice postcard sort of video with good composition. Did you use any camera filtration or post processing? Yes, you must reduce volume for loud sources. Hugh Mobley September 7th, 2007, 05:16 PM 3 clips of my stay on NW Colorado, Near Meeker. Clip 2 are some elk we got into, I don't hunt them anymore but still get the shakes when we have elk all around, especially when the bulls are bugling. Clip 3 is of the the White River. I have 4 hours of tape I'm editing. Done with HVR V1 http://www.hughmobley.com/clips.html Hugh Mobley September 10th, 2007, 11:02 AM Redid clips to the following to see if they will load faster: http://www.hughmobley.com/white%20river.html http://www.hughmobley.com/snell.html http://www.hughmobley.com/river/html http://www.hughmobley.com/elk/html Ray Bell September 11th, 2007, 05:21 AM couldn't get any to load.... Hugh Mobley September 17th, 2007, 09:52 AM I re did all clips: they should load without too much delay, small wmv clips http://www.hughmobley.com/snell.html http://www.hughmobley.com/elk.html http://www.hughmobley.com/white.html http://www.hughmobley.com/butterfly.html Robert Petersen October 12th, 2007, 01:06 PM Nice Video! Do you have any full size files to view and evaluate (1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720)? I would really like to see how well the camera and extenders did on this video. Thanks. John Bosco Jr. October 26th, 2007, 02:40 AM Nice job... might want to consider turning down color setting, looks a bit over-saturated. You also might want to consider an HC7 or Canon HV20 as your new in-car camera. Chris Hull November 19th, 2007, 04:10 PM Baby horses! You can't go wrong with cute animals. That's a nice postcard sort of video with good composition. Did you use any camera filtration or post processing? Also, the dimension of your video is 1280x720. Can you set the 1440 pixel height of the 4:3 cmos directly to 720? Or have u made these changes in post production? Looks pretty good - i'm searching for a semi-pro hd cam myself... Pedro Martins January 11th, 2008, 10:57 PM here are some shots i made around Lisbon, that i cut together with an old Rolling Stones music. I hope you like it Pedro Martins January 11th, 2008, 10:59 PM http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=25561889 Dave Durham January 13th, 2008, 03:02 AM Greetings all, I'm learning a lot about the 35mm Lens adapters and plan on purchasing one shortly. I have a question about lenses. I notice everyone talking about primes and not much talk about zooms. Can zooms be used at all - even when simply set to a single focal length? Is it a sharpness issue? A speed or focusing issue? I have a several zooms with my primes and would like to know if they too can be used in this way. Thanks in advance, Dave Durham Tom Hardwick January 13th, 2008, 03:09 AM Nothing wrong with zooms except that compared to primes they're bigger, heavier, slower, exhibit more flare and distortion, are less sharp and more expensive. You can see why in this game they're not popular. Bob Hart January 13th, 2008, 04:37 AM At risk of being deemed a bit of a blowhard - I suggest you might try this thread :- http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=111783 Dave Durham January 13th, 2008, 11:22 AM Tom, thanks, I had forgotten about flare - something I try to use to my advantage in SLR work but typically would be undesirable in video. Bob, thanks for the link - it helped a lot. I appreciate both of your fast knowledgeable responses. -Dave Kajito Nagib January 13th, 2008, 06:12 PM muito bom:-) Matthew Scott January 13th, 2008, 06:30 PM Wow!! Awesome footage, niocely edited - thanks for sharing :) Sergio Barbosa January 14th, 2008, 05:06 AM Gostei bastante. Não é à toa que se conseguem imagens assim. Taken with Sony V1 http://www.hughmobley.com/arboretum.html Darko Debelic April 15th, 2008, 05:34 PM Hello Hugh, I am very impressed by the high definition you achieve with your streaming clips. I have never managed to get that kind of sharpness with my V1 footage rendered for the web. Could I ask you to give some tips on what kind of workflow is needed to achieve that kind of quality? Thank you. Hugh Mobley April 20th, 2008, 01:13 PM sure, I film at 1080i sometimes auto, sometimes manual, I capture clips with cineform NEO HDV usually as an avi clip and only deinterlace with cineform. I edit in Vegas 8 as progressive 29.97. and render as mpeg 4 custom, usually 1 pass at 3 mbps progressive at around 550 x 380 aspect. Rendering at a higher bit rate will increase clip size where it takes too long to load. My dvd's of the same clips are coming out almost as good as these and are sd, but are very good. the raw m2t played directly from the camera, on my hd tv are outstanding. Another thing you can try if you have cineform is to cature or convert directly to mov. clips and edit those and then render to mpeg4, colors are little deeper, blacks are little blacker, and so on. you have to see for your self. to play on your computer directly you cloud go to 5-6 mbps or even up to 8 but depending on your computer they may not play well, I use media player classic 6.0 because windows media player is buggy, quick time is no problem. I have tried filming progressive and never been happy with it unless the camera and talent or object is not moving and no panning or camera movement. so this is the way I do it now Hugh Mobley April 20th, 2008, 06:02 PM here are two clips, one an avi and the other a mov captured with cineform and rendered mpeg4, there is a noticeable difference between the two, same camera settings. they take afew minutes to load, be patient http://www.hughmobley.com/flowers%20avi.html http://www.hughmobley.com/flowers%20mov.html Darko Debelic April 21st, 2008, 03:47 PM Thanks a lot Hugh. I use Final Cut Pro but I am pretty new to HDV so I'll have to do some more experimenting with settings and such. Your workflow seems pretty straightforward so I must be doing something wrong. :-) Anyway, I had a good look at the .AVI and .MOV clips you posted and the AVI seems more natural to me, the MOV having whites blown up and the blacks pretty squashed. I'll do some shooting and I'll let you see some stuff ASAP. Thanks again. |
