I am finishing up a "drama" independent and have been considering a "documentary" as maybe a next project. Just considering the "profit" aspects, compared to other genre's (comedy, horror, drama, ect.) do documentaries typically deliver a decent rate of return? I realize there are many... many factors involved but just as an example say the crew is professional technical level... the topic is pretty interesting... think of a typical one or two camera HD crew shooting for a couple weeks, then editing. The doc turns out pretty decent, not great, just decent... cable worthly and DVD worthy. I have produced slapstick, horror, and drama and all these have done well... but have never tried a doc.

You can always do a doc on horror or slapstick.

The most recent issue of "Student Film Maker" has an article that discusses the profitability of films and gives some statistics. The article is about novice investors and how to discuss "movie making" with them.

The article is basic but the statistics are interesting.

I know you can get back issues from their Web site.
