I would think that if I hook the camera up to my NLE (Final Cut Pro) with a firewire cable, and then hooked the component cable from the camera to my HDTV, I could view the edited version of my timeline. So far, no luck. Is there a way to do this? I've got the camera set to P2/MCR.

You can't go firewire to component out.

Your options are the Matrox MXO box, which will take your second DVI output and give you a pixel for pixel output in YUV colorspace, giving you the ability to view via DVI, SDI, component or composite. It is an amazing product for only $995.

Your other option is to monitor through a capture card from AJA or Decklink either using SDI (if you have an SDI monitor), component (that would work with your HDTV) or DVI if you have a SDI->DVI converter box. Decklink now has HDMI cards so you could go directly HDMI to a TV.

The only thing you can't do is loop through the camera fw->component.

Bill,

You can also use either the KONA or BlackMagic card to downconvert in real time to an SDTV using the component out on the card. It will letterbox the HD content and allow you to use a regular TV set - assuming it has component inputs.
