I have a couple of Sony WRT-805 transmitters, both with Sony ECM-77 mics which I use with Sony WRR-805 receivers. Recently, I was doing a job and experienced a number of "dropouts" on certain words, particularly "buts" and "ands". They are not the usual distorted pops that you get if you record sound without a pop shield - the signal simply drops (almost as though a compressor has kicked in) and returns on the next word. If anyone has the time to listen, I can e-mail an MP3 sample of the problem.
This happened probably 20-30 times in a shoot lasting 6 hours - the mic was placed facing downwards (away from the presenter's mouth). I ended up replacing the radio system with a wired ECM-77 (mic placed identically for continuity) and the problem went away. I can only assume that the sound level at the mic was overloading the transmitter input...
Subsequent testing on both wireless systems revealed that the problem exisits on both, so i can't imagine it's a fault. I tried changing attenuation settings, phase settings etc.
My problem is that I can't always use a wired mic (that's why I've got the radios!) and I can't think how to stop the pops. The Sony 805 appears to have quite a good name, so I can't imagine it's a "feature".
The bottom line is that I'll have to change mic system unless I can solve the problem, so if anyone can help, it would be appreciated! If not, advice on new radio mics would be great!
Sorry for the long post!
