View Full Version : Preset Footage, adapting (Panalook)
Jay Stebbins December 7th, 2006, 02:06 PM I intend on Posting footage here... But what is the best format to save a two minute sequence that balances between quality and downloadability?
I will upload it to my server and provide a link.
I am looking for the advice of others until the preset is tweaked before adding it to any of the preset threads.
I am using FCP and a bit of a beginner...
I will re-edit this post so it is usful to others later on.
Thanks,
Jay
Richard Adams December 15th, 2006, 11:39 AM sorry, wrong place
Kenji Kodama December 19th, 2006, 11:25 PM The format of the m2t file is A1, the latter is H1.

Barlow Elton December 26th, 2006, 11:55 PM I think the AF works pretty darn well with the A1. This is 24F AF at near full telephoto, handheld.
It was intentionally shot a little neutral. I recommend adding a little contrast and saturation in VLC player under "extended controls".

Insung Hwang December 27th, 2006, 10:47 PM Looks great! Almost don't need the 35mm adapter if you can shoot with the longer focal length.
Shannon Mathew December 29th, 2006, 12:53 PM Does anyone have slow motion footage from the A1 that they would like to post?
Gabor Tarnok January 1st, 2007, 12:43 PM I have made a short Christmas clip with my A1 in low light condition. Seems the lens and 3CCDs did great job.
Here is the file (95MB): http://rapidshare.com/files/9781054/Christmas_2006.wmv.html
Parameters:
Mode: 25f
Shutter: 1/25
Gain: 0db

Gabor Tarnok January 10th, 2007, 10:25 AM Here is my second A1 clip. I have filmed it on Danube riverside.
You are able to download from here (65 MB): http://rapidshare.com/files/11085551/Romai_Part.wmv.html
Cam's settings:
Mode: 25f
Shutter: 1/50 and 1/25
Gain: 0db
ND: 2
Focus: Manual
Preset: Alister Chapman's
I really love this camera. I am using Aspect HD for post production. I have added Unsharp Mask in Premiere (I have noticed that Cineform codec produce a bit unsharp result compared to original M2T file).
I have noticed a small bug in Premiere: When I apply both Unsharp Mask and Speed 50% on a clip and there are some cross dissolve transition between clips, the final rendred film have white frames where the cross transition starts and ends. So I had to remove the unsharp mask from slow speed clips...
Best Regards,
Gabor
Ian Schutt January 10th, 2007, 05:00 PM Greetings all, unless you have bandwidth to burn don't download.(About 115Mb)
First post.
What I learnt day one with the XH-AI.
Don't ignore the ND filter prompt.
The LCD takes a bit of getting used to for focus (Note to self: Read up on peaking)
The standard mike is way better than my XL1, but under the flight path to to Kingsford Smith Airport isn't ideal for capturing sondtrack.
Ripples in water can look wierd like fast motion if you don't get it right.
It's hard to find a file host that doesn't annoy more than assist.
Compressing HDV is a lot harder than it seems.

Darren Wharton January 23rd, 2007, 06:01 PM Hi…..I’ve seen some fantastic clips on this forum from the XH A1 which have totally sold me on buying this camera. My main interest in this cam is for making independent films…..
My question is: Is there a list of new productions using the Canon for new films, i.e. Blair Witch...Open Water, November, as there was for the DVX100 & the HVX200. I’d be very interested to see who’s using this camera for cinematic release…I’m sure there must be many..?? The XHA1 has barely been released in the UK so info like this is non-existent.
I do understand that the camera is new on the scene……...but the question is worth asking.
Thanks in advance

Brian Ladue January 30th, 2007, 02:07 PM Can someone please post some footage with the NOMAGENTA setting. I would very much like to see what it looks like in use, as this is the setting I would most likely often use. Thank you
James Duffy January 30th, 2007, 11:41 PM I posted this in "Show Your Work", but seeing as how it was filmed with the A1, I thought I should call attention to it in this forum.

Coming from the GL2, I'm amazed at what this camera is capable of. After hooking the raw footage from this video up to an HDTV, I'm really excited about what I'm going to be able to do with this camera.
Deke Ryland February 3rd, 2007, 03:13 PM Hey guys, I'm relatively new to the A1 and videography as a whole and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to which glass ND filters to get for the best DOF shots of subjects doing interviews, etc. Or are the two built-in ND filters good enough? I haven't done that much testing but I am headed out of town where they have a nice camera store and want to pick up some ND glass filters if you think I should have them in addition to the in-camera ones the A1 has.
Looking for any suggestions on the ND strength levels, etc. Thanks!
Barlow Elton February 22nd, 2007, 11:20 PM Sorry, had to take it down. Mods, please delete if possible.

Steven Dempsey March 11th, 2007, 05:26 PM Hi again,
Here's some footage I did with my BW preset. Same park as previous footage

Kevin Martorana March 16th, 2007, 11:03 AM Guys....I have posted some stuff on our website...I'm hoping my web admin doesn't "bust" us due the the amount of bandwidth downloading...
Maybe Chris can give me access to upload these files.
Here's the deal...
this footage was shot both HDV and DVCProHD at the same time. We used the HD-SDI output and ran matching TC also.
There is a PDF file you can read about how we did this....Canon did a little article on us...so just download the file.
Also...all the shots in this QT are DVCPro100 except one. I know it will be tough to tell which in a compressed QT....but I'll tell you. The last shot is HDV.
We edited this on an Avid Adrenaline...ingesting the DVCProHD AND the HDV.
There are several scenes in this video (ultimately a 28 minute plant tour and a 4 minute tradeshow video) where we COULDN'T power or tether the DVCPro HD deck....so we just shot HDV. We thought it would be a good test.
It was...we can see the difference of course....but cutting the footage together matched nicely...and ultimately...downcoverting it to SD and playing on a DVD in letterbox mode....no one can see the difference.
I was seriously impressed with the white hot whites...and the grays and blacks and keeping the chroma colors. Contrast is not an issue with this camera.
Also...we used a N6 ND filter in the matte box for the pouring shots, in addition to the ND on the camera.
Camera was set 1080i and shooting 24f.
Enjoy.

Steven Dempsey March 16th, 2007, 04:48 PM Hi Kevin, thanks for posting. I think you meant to post this in the XLH1 forum because this is where we post footage from the XHA1 and XHG1.

I'm sure Chris will move it.
Rolf Seitz March 20th, 2007, 05:29 AM Hello,
here my first sample clip of my A1. Shot in 1080/25f for my current project on bouldering. CC done in AE Pro 7.0. Compressed with Sorenson Squeeze 4 (1280x720 25fps).
Criticism is welcome! ;)

Rafael Lopes March 26th, 2007, 01:00 PM Hi Gang,
Check this out:
http://rapidshare.com/files/22913178/Raw35_Test1_windows_media.wmv.html
I used a 10+ macro attached to the Canon A1 then at about 5cm from the macro I had a 7+ macro and then about 5cm from the 7+ macro I had a nikon lens.
On the second shot I twisted the 7+ macro a bit to try to get a kind "tilt and shift" effect going on. On the last shot you can see a lot of dust.
Anyway, let me know what you guys think. I'm far far far far away from having any knowledge on how to build a 35mm adapter. This was just a little test.
Alain Mayo April 10th, 2007, 05:55 AM This is my first day with my new xh-A1, I was testing how this cam was at night with available light. Shoot at 24f sd at 0db using one of the cinegama presets. One question , I was trying to upload one of the presets I download from here to the cam and the card to cam option was gray out , how do you upload from card to cam?.

John Wheeler April 25th, 2007, 06:28 AM Just received my A1 last wednesday. Cracked that thing outta the box and wow!!. I was impressed with the size, the look, the texture, the overall build. It's almost worth the 3,250 just to be able to look at it.
Had a chance to play around with it last night. Shot a few close up's of objects from about the house. Shot a sun-set as well.
The video I've posted here has its fair amount of problems. Some shakeyness, some graininess, some blurriness. All my fault. But there are a couple of good shots, showing the close-up, detailed, capability of this camera.

Nathan Quattrini May 3rd, 2007, 09:55 AM not bad, though i`m not big into cars, I like asian women :)) The quality is great, what preset did you use for indoors on the show floor?
Paul Torak May 10th, 2007, 02:17 PM Hello all; Just wondered if anyone recalls a clip/link that was up awhile back, possibly late last year, showing a musician playing guitar on a railroad trestle, in a warm sepia like tone? Could have been a band video.
Sorry, can't remember if it was in the A1, H1. or G1 forums. Now that I've rebuilt my computer, I should be able to view that video, and all the other great contributions here without the player stuttering. Thanks for any help in advance, and all the great pointers to using the A1 to it's fullest
Dave
Mark Rook May 14th, 2007, 02:43 PM Did a little more testing using the 25f on the A1. Panning seemed a lot smoother and the close-ups using manual focus gave great results. Shot with 1/50th shutter, auto aperture and 1/32 ND filter.

Brian Brown May 29th, 2007, 11:24 PM The worship minister at my church wrote a song for a father/ daughter that attend: he's an artist, and she a ballet dancer. We had interviewed the artist for a video segment to act as an intro to this live dance segment featuring his daughter dancing to the song, performed at a Christian conference we had last Tuesday at our church. We also were lucky to have a local string duet, Acoustic Eidolon accompany the live set, and I filmed it all, along with one rehearsal, to cut this music video, that we later used in worship services Sunday.
I shot everything on the PANALOOK preset, 0db gain, tungsten WB, and all hand-held (some shakily so) except for the interview segments.

Paul Vilchur May 30th, 2007, 12:53 AM A group of friends from film school and myself shot this for the 24 hour film challenge here in Toronto in March. The "challenge" was to make a documentary/mockumentary" for the theme "Do It Yourself." The prop was a paint swatch and the line was "Famous Last Words." Not amazing but still a worthy attempt.

It was only my second time out with the camera. I used Steven Dempsey's earlier VividRGB preset(from back in March). I love your VividRGB preset. It's really good.
Anyways, shot 24F in Standard Def, with minimal lighting from some 500W lights. A lot of low light footage here that's grainy, I was really pushing the gain as much as +12(bad move by me). We chose to go handheld as a creative decision. Looked great on the big screen when it was screened in the theater though.
Enjoy.

Larry Huntington June 4th, 2007, 07:06 PM I have a 3-minute HDV file (shot with the XH-A1) I would like to show on this forum...Chris, could you host this on this site? If so, what would be the preferred size and compression? I want Steven Dempsey to see this, as it resembles what he shoots.
Thanks, Larry Huntington

Jim Wilson June 7th, 2007, 02:39 PM Hi All,
I am a wildlife film maker. I currently own a Canon XL 1s and a Canon XM-2
I am working on a tight budget. I have been reading as much as I can about HDV and am looking for advice on "upgrading" options. If I opt for the XL H1 can I use my current 100-400 EF lens and XL adapter? Should I continue to use my XL1s for the long range shots and go for an XH A1 for other shots that do not require very high power magnifiaction. I am afraid that my existing library of XL 1s material may soon be obsolete with the shift to HDV.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Jim Wilson
Kyle Prohaska June 7th, 2007, 04:03 PM I say do it, the A1 has a x20 reach which is a good amount IMO. Plus it will pack probably 8x or more REZ than that of your XL1S. You should look in this section of the site for stuff by Stephen Dempsey who is in your line of work. He bought the XLH1 then after some use decided on the A1 instead. Give him a PM, he'll give you some good advice im sure. O and btw, if you CAN afford the H1...I say get 2 A1's instead, much more value there.

Michael Pilipp June 13th, 2007, 05:30 AM This is my first Videoclip. With:

Doug Davis June 13th, 2007, 11:47 PM Which glidecam? I just got a glidecam 4000 pro and it's suppose to be here tomorrow...? Hopefully same one? Lol...
Nice video... The audio kind of cuts in and out with the foley effects of pouring.... I thought something was wrong with my sound card... Might try having some light ambient sound so that the effects don't 'pop'... But overally I really liked the style...

Good stuff Marcus,
Thank you for posting this!
Jeff Nelson June 22nd, 2007, 09:56 AM My kids are in a big dance recital this weekend, took my A-1 on Wednesday to shoot a few pieces of the dress rehearsal. Low light is not this camera's long suit, but got some decent shots all the same.
This is 24p using the RGBVIVID or whatever it's called, though I toned it down a bit from the default setting:
http://www.mostlymagic.tv/demo/recital.mov
I recently finished another documentary with the camera, a 50-minute piece, but don't want to put that one online since it was a "film for hire" which is a little too personal to splash across the web.
Mike Gorski June 23rd, 2007, 11:05 PM Low light looks wonderful. Very nice.
Gregg Havens June 24th, 2007, 08:03 PM Much has been said about the zoom capability of the A1 but I have yet to see an example. Here is a short example of zoom and near macro. I'm not an expert (heck my last video camera was 10 years ago. I'm very happy with the results so far. If you have problems viewing it try the VLP player at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Jerrod Cordell June 27th, 2007, 01:57 AM I know youtube compression is crap, but until I get a website going this is the best I could do.
Here's footage from a Drama Camp I went to earlier this month in the Highlands of North Carolina. I was mostly just screwing around with my camera and screwing around with Final Cut Pro 6.
It was shot in 24f, 1/48th shutter speed. Converted to 30fps (since that's what youtube likes.)

Dave Park July 1st, 2007, 12:46 PM Hi,
I'm a new XH-A1 owner, and last night I got to go out and video a local jazz group a friend plays in.
This is going to sound strange but the youtube compressed version looks much better. I had problems with focus on the original, and the compression helped that a bit :).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt_Dju-1Mco
I also did some image tuning in compressor. I really loved the camera preset I used on this one, and white balancing does make a difference!
I'm still learning the camera, and I'm completely new to the whole video thing, but I really had a blast doing it! Anyway, any comments appreciated.
Thanks for watching!
Blake Burress July 11th, 2007, 09:26 AM Here's a short I made with a couple of friends. I wanted to do some tests in terms of editing a scene with dialogue. There wasn't as much light as I would have liked, but it was kind of a last minute thing. It was shot on the XHA1 at 1080 with a RedRock M2 35 adapter and a Nikon 50mm lens. Thanks for watching!
Until I can get a high quality version uploaded, YouTube will have to do. Hang in there.

Jason Sovey August 8th, 2007, 04:20 PM I shot some video at a Hot August Nights Show-n-Shine event.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dGifbhHAd0
Specifics:
Used a monopod for some shots. Good for crowded events, but not rock-solid. Set the camera on the ground for low angle footage.
Shot at 60i, 1/60, ND filter at 1/32. Used the OUTSIDEN custom preset. With zebras set at 85%, I dialed in the shots to where I had just a little striping on the subject. I think they're still a bit underexposed. With bright sunlight and glossy paint, it was a challenge.
Alain Mayo August 9th, 2007, 06:24 AM This is the first time I shot and edit hdv in Vegas 7, the subject test was my daughter. 24f 1/48 Canon's default setting and CC in vegas(Filters used: brightness ad contrast, color curves and color balance)
