Jason Sharaba December 2nd, 2008, 09:26 PM Nice colors! Did you time warp this footage at all? It seemed a bit choppy at points.
I must say that the Letus extreme is a great add on. Can't wait to get mine.
Good stuff!
Scott Murphy December 2nd, 2008, 11:17 PM Thanks Jason.
I didn't time warp it, but i did want to have a strong contrast between still and handheld. But also, the wind was killer up there. Even with everything locked down tightly, it caused things to shake. That coupled with idiots who constantly bumped into the camera could cause the choppiness. Plus, I couldn't get the compression I wanted under 500 mb for vimeo. But overall, I am still really satisfied with it.
The Letus is seriously one of the greatest investments ever. It is a very smart buy.
Jason Sharaba December 3rd, 2008, 12:30 PM Well..it is good work! Actually, the choppiness was due to a slow net connection. No worries!
I am saving up to get my Letus extreme. It looks fantastic!
Steve Lewis December 3rd, 2008, 09:52 PM Magic Bullet Looks, what else? :)
Christopher Neville December 4th, 2008, 11:57 AM Out of curiosity, did you shoot 24p or 30p? If either of those were used, I'm not sure why interlacing artifacts would showing up. I have found Panalook2 to be be a great preset that gives a good bit of latitude, and adjusting the levels during editing really makes the footage look much better. Your footage looked kind of flat. Did you do anything in post?
Jason Sharaba December 4th, 2008, 12:12 PM I shot in 24P, did not do any post production. Once I finished editing I made an avi out of it using Premiere and then uploaded to Vimeo. I must be doing something wrong. :(
Note: There is no interlacing problems when I burn to DVD.
Rich Woodrick December 5th, 2008, 12:46 AM Beautiful colors in the shots. The smokys are one of my favorite vacation spots. To bad I didnt have a decent cam when I was at the Clingmans Dome videotaping a bear breaking into a car. The video is on youtube if you want to see it.
Rich Woodrick December 5th, 2008, 01:22 AM Alan Barcus playing his song "Last of the Cowbows" on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/2427410)
I videotaped this show in a small theater where there wasn't much lighting change.
I used the panalook2 preset to try to match the two cams. My wife ran the HV30 from the balcany, pritty much in auto mode, 30F. I darkened the HV30 in post. To bad she didn't take the exposure down a little and zoom in more. I added some digital zoom for emotion.
Comments on the video appreciated.
Thanks,
Rich
Jean-Philippe Archibald December 5th, 2008, 10:37 AM Pretty well done! The two cams mixed well.
In my opinion, the balconny angle isn't a good idea. It would have been better if you put the HV30 at stage level on the opposite angle. Maybe it wasn't possible in this theater.
But overall, it's very good. I shot a lot of live concert myself and I know how it can be challenging.
Did you got the sound feed from the audio board?
Rich Woodrick December 5th, 2008, 11:26 AM I agree with the camara angle. If I get another chance at recording at this theater I will try to get stage level. Yes i got an input from the sound board and mixed in my NTG-2 using the other XLR jack on the A1. I made my first surround sound DVD using the sound boards input for the front speakers and the NTG-2 in the rear speakers. It sounds good..
Rich
Bill Thesken December 6th, 2008, 02:10 AM The sound is really good. Nice trick with the XLR inputs.
Jeff Nelson December 6th, 2008, 09:37 AM I shot this Thursday night in one of the smallest rooms I've ever had to shoot in... Couldn't even get a backlight behind him, had to come from the side in a doorway.
This is the same documentary I posted the other promo for a week ago:

Denys Pyevtsov December 6th, 2008, 01:26 PM Hi there,
today I had the opportunity to film the great opening of the first Apple Store in Germany.
Here's a little clip.

Brendan Anderson December 8th, 2008, 12:23 PM As nervous as it made me, I decided to give a try to using the "Spotlight Mode" of the XH-A1 to see how it would handle a stage production featuring brightly-lit puppets against a dim symphony orchestra. This was shot simply sitting in a seat with my tripod.
Scenes from Petrushka on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/2184388)
It struggled a bit with the fact that two of the puppet subjects were nearly white and the third was very dark/black. Any tips on further optimizing the Spotlight Mode for future shoots like this?

Corey Hill December 8th, 2008, 12:48 PM i love the shots stephen nice lil lighting look you got going there..
keep up the good work!
John Stakes December 8th, 2008, 12:55 PM Do as many tests as you want Steve! I love seeing other people's footage because it alows me to see exactly what the XHA1 is capable of. I used to be very dissapointed with my footage, but by watching others, and experimenting on my own, I learn more and more. I shoot everything with the VIVIDRGB preset, but I was playing around with the Vision presets last week, and I will be shooting a little footage with them shortly...looks "filmlike" (ugh I can't stand that term)
JS
Arif Syed December 9th, 2008, 11:52 PM I'm sorry that I cant add tips for you, but why are the people controlling the puppets using such reflective clothes? If they used more of a matte fabric they would be less distracting.
Roger Lee December 10th, 2008, 06:25 AM Hello All,
For those of you who have not seen a Pileated woodpecker up close, and anyone else interested.
Attached is a link to a short (1 1/2 minute) video I did with the A-1 of a male Pileated woodpecker.
Pileated Woodpecker feeding on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/2478142)
The bird was about 10 feet outside my den window. The camera is on full telephoto.
Take care all.
Mark Williams December 10th, 2008, 09:30 AM Hi Roger,
Nice clip. They are really common in North Georgia, but I have never seen one at a feeder which is behavior that I found very interesting. I always thought them to be kind of prehistoric looking creatures.
Ian Wright December 10th, 2008, 11:26 AM We have a family of Great Spotted woodpeckers feed from our peanut feeder every day.
Great video. You've set me a challenge...

Tom Hardwick December 10th, 2008, 11:35 AM I'm a great believer in the spotlight mode and find it a very intelligent program on my Sony cams. It'll go from zero to -5 stops, a most impressive range. When you've no idea what the stage lighting director is going to do next, it's a lifeline.
Backlight mode is dumb stupidity next to it.
tom.
Roger Lee December 10th, 2008, 10:23 PM Thanks for the comments. The video was fun to do. I took the DVD to school today to show some students the bird. They also seemed to enjoy it.
Steve Lewis December 11th, 2008, 04:12 AM I love seeing other people's footage because it alows me to see exactly what the XHA1 is capable of. I used to be very dissapointed with my footage, but by watching others, and experimenting on my own, I learn more and more.
Thanks John,
Yes, I too didn't like the footage coming from my A1 until I realized that taking time to set the camera adjustments properly, shooting with sufficient light and doing some nice color grading all adds to super footage! Can't wait to see your shots!

Dennis Murphy December 16th, 2008, 01:29 PM It still amazes me that despite my understanding of aerodynamics etc that those monsters get off the ground.
I found it interesting to see the mini tornado thingies forming around the intakes of the jets on power-up.
Looks good.
Dennis Murphy December 16th, 2008, 01:34 PM I couldn't help but notice the 'Keep New Zealand Beautiful' T-shirt.
Classic.

Tim Cee December 17th, 2008, 11:37 AM Very well done. From concept to finished video, all aspects that went into making this show in the final results, nice!
Jason Sharaba December 17th, 2008, 08:36 PM Nice Footage. As an ex-aerospace propulsion specialist, I can appreciate the majesty and beauty of these aircraft. You did it justice. Nice work.

Will Mahoney December 19th, 2008, 03:22 PM That was awesome! What a huge, majestic bird. Wow.
So now I have some questions. I live near a major airport (CLE) and the airplanes land right over my house, so I've managed to get some great long-exposure light trails on my DSLR.
But how do you get such great footage of the airplane on the ground? Do you need permission from the airport? I've been wary of taking my camera over there (really only 3/4 mile away) and filming at the fence line. But I'm concerned that a caravan of black gov't SUVs will pop up and take my gear. Is this not really a valid concern?

Many thanks to everyone who took time to comment!
The Jumbo was landing at Manchester Airport in England. I was filming on a grassy mound overlooking the airport boundary fence. Never had a problem with the authorities, however I guess it would be a different story if I where to film this kind of thing in the United States!
Tripod is a Vinten Vision 3.
James Orlowski December 20th, 2008, 09:09 AM Any suggestions/critiques on this piece of video?
Pittsburgh Skyline - Night on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/2583381)
I shot it with my Canon XH-A1 at +3 gain with a shutter of 1/8 and the LOWNOISE custom preset.
Improvements, if any? Suggestions on shooting night shots with a camera that has 1/3" pick-up chips?
Bill Grant December 20th, 2008, 11:39 PM Could you not have gotten away without the +3db? Especially at an 1/8? Looks good to me though... The cars seem to be moving too fast :)
Bill
James Orlowski December 21st, 2008, 07:54 AM I guess I should have shot it both at +3 and 0 to compare, but I didn't think of it at the time.

Wil Vermeesch December 26th, 2008, 03:27 AM Hi,
Also this year again very nice experiences during our day and night drives in South Africa Leopard & Hyena on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/2621704)
I have some problems with interlace but don't know how to solve (tips?)
I use Avid Liquid edition 7.2
Movie made with Canon XHA1 standard settings.
Wil
Bryce Comer December 28th, 2008, 08:41 PM Hi Wil,
Really nice pictures of the Leopard & Heyena. It is ashame about the interlacing though. I would suggest you try adjusting your output settings in Liquid. The best bet would be to output to 720p then upload that to Vimeo. The file size may well be large, but Vimeo will compress it anyway. By outputting from Liquid with a progressive file, you will get rid of all the interlacing problems. Play around with the output settings & see how you go. If you are still having problems, please let us know.
Groeten,
Bryce
Michael Hutson December 30th, 2008, 08:56 PM Jason,
Go to the Vimeo site and at the forum there is a sticky page (Look for "Tutorials")explaining the editting, format, de-interlacing procedures for just about every NLE.

Michael Hutson December 30th, 2008, 09:09 PM I had to throw this up. I am quite excited about my gift. I upgraded from a canon elura 100 to an XH A1!!!!!!! OMG! I have spent many hours viewing dvi. Just want to say "Thanks" for all the great advice that is availible here. I greatly appreciate you sharing your wisdom and experience.

Camera set in manual, 1/60, preset vividrgb, manually white balanced with a small canvas frame I found in the garage.

Thanks again,

Giovanni Speranza December 30th, 2008, 09:42 PM Using a totally new approach, i developed the preset 35MMFILM which is optimized for 35mm adapters.
Sample video: Test on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/2676198)
35MMFILM features:
Less magenta than ever
Lower gamma
More color separation and contrast
To acheve a lower gamma (lower than possible with the A1) i rised the high-mid to high levels.
Just lower slightly the lens aperture of the camera and you will get lower gamma with normal highlights and mid tones! :)
It is interesting to see how much different is this setting from the others.
