Jonas, did you get the new firmware on an SD card with the lens? Or do we dumb "swedes" still need to see the authorised Canon repair center to do the installation? Hope your new lens is fine! /Johan

Here it is (and firmvare is included even in Sweden). And here is my lovely doughter telling me to make dinner instead of playing around with that stupid toy! I will post some more footage later tonight!

Here is my first test on a res chart. I had to run home from my office to see the new 6x zoom. So I printed out a a res-chart and I had our ironing board as tripod. As you know the EVF on the XL H1 is not the best, so had a bit on the wall as well... But as you can see, nice resolution at the corners. A little bit of CA (purple fringe), but noticable less then the 20x lens (or what do you say?). When just playing around, I get feel that the lens has a really nice low barrel distortion.

PS. I had to fold the test chart, you may see a slight "bend" at the center. DS.

Jonas, thanks for posting. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you do these again with a couple of adjustments:
- verify that a back focus has been done on the lens
- frame using on-screen monitor (eg capture window) so it isn't overscanned
- label the picture with the lens used or put the lens used somewhere in the file name

Again, thanks for taking the time -- lots of people will be very interested in this lens!

It already is (at least in the USA). I received ours with a 6X Monday.

Jonas Nystrom

OK. Here it is. I've done the back focus, pictures is frame grabs.

Barrel distorion; Chart and some shots done at my studio.

Resolution Charts; at full wide and full tele.

Depth of field; with help from my assistent Linda, one at full wide and one at full tele (shot with Schneider Black Frost 1/2).

And here is one more on barrel distortion and one pic on the 6X mounted on the H1 with rod system. For gear ring (follow focus) we will need a gear ring with 34 cm circumference.

Thanks for the shots and info, Jonas. If you could possibly do a small selection of test photos at outdoor locations sometime in the future, it would also provide much-needed added information on this interesting lens.

Some exteriors shot with the new wide (stills). All shot at full wide. Have a look at the low barrel distortion, extreme long DOF and the angles.

I love the manual iris ring!

I love the manual iris ring!

I think i have a defective lens. When I have it in Manual mode
and push exposure lock like it says to do the iris ring still does
nothing. Am I missing something?

thanks

I donot have lens but I have ask if you flashed the bios on your camera when you got the lens? I do not think the iris ring will work unless you do this first.

Good Luck. I sure hope it is something like this and not a defect.

Exactly, you must update your camera firmware (included).

Hmmmmm....
It is already at 1.0.3.0 (new body only kit).

I will email Canon and see what hey say.

Here is an uncompressed 10bit 1080p frame grab w/6x lens.

I like this camera. :) I will post a :60 spot we shot on monday
sometime this week.

Thanks for the exteriors Jonas.

There seems to be slight colour fringing/chromatic aberrations in places, although probably not so noticeable in a moving image.

Can you remember the f/stop settings for each of the exterior shots shown?

It would be nice to view a side-by-side test between the XL 3XSD and 6XHD lenses to see how much of an improvement has been made with new lens - in both perfomance and handling.

I think the fringing is far less then in the 20x lens!

Sorry, I did the exteriors in a rush, and did not make notes of the f-stops!

Will, as posted earlier, the 6X ships with an SD Card with the firmware upgrade needed for it to communicate with camera. Be careful you don't throw it away with packaging. Don't have our 6X yet (coming from Zotz Digital) - could someone describe the packaging of the SD card so others don't lose it.

It's easy to miss...especially if you are tossing things out quickly to get to the lens :)

It is with a 3" by 4" folded piece of paper in a plastic sleeve.

...

Yes, I agree entirely...although the main problem of fringing with the 20X lenses is at the extreme telephoto end.

I had the 6X zoom for two days, and I think will have it mounted on my XL H1 permanently! I think Canon have done a really nice work here.

I think you will need "slim" screw in filters to avoid vignetting.

Jon Bickford
December 7th, 2006, 12:32 AM
SOOOO much nicer than the 3x SD lens,

Jonas, were those barrel distortion examples at the widest setting? it's definetely there but not bad at all, looks pretty similar to some of the images i've gotten with the 20x at full wide.

Jonas Nystrom
December 7th, 2006, 01:18 AM
Yes, on the widest. It,s noticable but not annoying!

Hi All, I am new to this group, and new to film making but I am having a go and loving it.

If you look at the meta info in the files you will see the f/stops.

The photo of Jonas's doughter was shot at a f-stop of 1.6 and Focal Lenght of 3.4mm

I think you will need "slim" screw in filters to avoid vignetting.

This is not a super wide angle so a slim filter may not be required. A Hoya "Pro1 Digital" filter seems to work OK (i.e. no vignetting visible in the viewfinder but as we all know that favorite part of the camera underscans some). This is not designated as a "slim" filter but a "low profile frame" is considered a feature of this series.

New protective filter, new polarizer, new Expodisc.....sigh!!!

Jonas Nystrom
December 8th, 2006, 01:18 AM
You may be right (but better safe then sorry I thought). I tried to see if a couple of millimeters would wignette the corners, and for what I can see, it is a close call.

And at Scandinavian Photo (my shop) the price is still the same, so I will go for the slim fit!

A. J. deLange
December 8th, 2006, 06:57 AM
You are absolutely right on that - best to try and see really but when I went into the local supplier's show room they laughed and said they couldn't remember the last time someone had asked for a filter as big as 82 mm. In the protective filter the difference in cost wasn't much but a "wide angle" polarizer, which can't be thin so they get wide by stepping up (the ring which mates with the lens is 82 mm but the front ring is 95) did cost me extra - a lot extra - and I'm not sure it's necessary. And it must weigh half a kg (a pound) but it is a beautifully made thing.

Lovely lens, new Possibilities (no, I'm not from Canon ;-). I really love the 6X, the missing part for camera, at last found. And the Macro is great, have look!

Jonas, thanks again for posting. The only bad thing is that I assured (not really **promised**) my wife that I'm done spending big dollars on video stuff for a while. But this may have forced me to consider "a while" to have elapsed.

Just curious, as I wasn't clear from the previous several posts...are you shooting with or without a UV or other filter? From an optical standpoint it would be better not to, of course, but from a safety standpoint it might be a bit frightening to put that front element very close up to some subjects!

I'll have to also show our daughter the latest pictures so she knows what doing homework looks like (just kidding, she does fine).

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences with this "new tool" Jonas. It seems that these photos have no meta data or atleast I could not find the info. I wonder why ?

Jonas Nystrom
December 8th, 2006, 01:15 PM
I haven't recieved my B+W Skylight filter SLIM ;-) fit yet, so this last post without any filter. And it's frame grabs, so there isn't any meta data!

And Peter, this is actually a rare momen't; my doughter doing her math homework, without any threat, persuasion or reward ;-D

The distortion is enough to make me wary of using max wide-angle as I track through buildings, because door frames that bow outward as I pass through them do not look good to my clients. If you've got a flat-screen TV, try this: stand in front of the TV with your camera perfectly perpendicular to the screen. Zoom to wide-angle and move so that the TV frame fills your v'finder frame. I’ll bet the results surprise you. As you move further away though and zoom in, things begin to look better and the barrel distortion lessens. On the Z1 you've got to go to 12 on the 00>99 zoom scale to get zero distortion. All is not lost though. My single element Bolex aspheric (a 0.5x) actually cures the Sony’s barrel distortion to some extent. At full wide-angle it’s still barrel distorted, but zooming in a bit gives perfectly straight lines.
