I'm thinking about adding a hard disk recorder to my HD-100 and I'm curious what you guys would advise regarding the DR-HD100 vs. the new Firestore's and other brands out there.

i've got a couple of fs-4HD's that work really well. they're a lot cheaper than the fs100's, but, then, they don't power up when the hd100 powers up.

The DR-HD100 has the following advantages over the FS-4:

1. Status in the viewfinder/LCD monitor - you can see in the viewfinder how many minutes are available on the drive, and you can see what mode it is in. This assures you that the drive is getting a good signal, and that it is rolling when it's supposed to. I think this is really important to know!

2. Power Management - when you turn the camera off, the drive will shut off as well


3. Split Record - allows you to program the camera so that one start button will roll only the tape, and another start button will roll only the drive.


Some nice features that are worth the small difference in price.

The drive for with the special features for the JVC camera is $100 cheaper at B&H for the same capacity as the straight FS4.

I just saw them at another site for $699. That's starting to be a pretty big price difference. I notice 24p is not listed as a supported format. I'm sure it is - but can you verify it handles 24p OK?

Keep in mind that the Focus FS4HD-40GB DOES NOT give you the following functions, which the JVC DR-HD100-40 DOES give you:

No. The record mode menu in the camera controls the record mode for both tape and HDD.

Maybe. I will check that today while I'm working a trade show.

For those that already use the hard drive recording systems, has anyone ever had any problems with missing files, missed shots etc. or does everyone still roll tape at the same time? Just curious, thinking about going this route but wondered about the consistency and the firewire plug.

For a while, I was nervous about shooting without tape backup. Things have now become so routine and reliable that I no longer run tape in my camera...it saves transport hours.

..and Carl, yes, these are nice features to have. They're certainly conveniences, however, none of these feature are show stoppers without them. If I didn't already own two FS4's, I'd probably buy the JVC dr-HD100.

A tangential question.

I shoot in 25P and have had dreadful problems with the whole FCP capture issue. Will these hard disk recorder devices eliminate that capture problem for 25P? Sorry if this is a basic question but I know little of these devices.

I can't really answer your question, since I run Vegas on a PC. Essentially, "capturing" has already occurred by the time the files get written onto the hard drive. At that point, FCP only needs to be able to recognize the m2t file.
