Just curious has anyone on the forums transferred any finished project shot on any of the JVC HD models to 35mm? What are the results? Does it get pixilated? What is your general impression?

Hi Hamad,

We have done numerous HD100 filmouts here at DuArt in New York, but all have been tests or demos, no finished features yet. In fact, I don't know of any finished features that have been filmed out yet, but there are several in the pipeline. "An Inconvenient Truth," which was in theaters last summer has a good bit of HD100 material in it.

The cover story of the current issue of DV magazine is about a filmout from the HD100 that we did. In brief, I would say that the results are quite good, especially when considering the cost of the camera and the inherent limitations of a 1/3" sensor. Pixelation is not a major issue. Most people are pleasantly surprised by the example filmouts that we regularly screen. If you want more descriptions from others do a search on this forum - there have been quite a few discussions.

By the way, the best looking material (in my opinion) is shot with the detail turned down low.

However, have you noticed any other things when working with video shot on the HD100?

Also, the skin detail effect... (that softens the skin tones)... should it be used or should it not be used from what you've seen?

If you searched this forum with the word "filmout" I believe you will find a lot of stuff.

Exposure and focus are critical (duh)!

I haven't tested this so I probably shouldn't say anything, but my tendency is to be suspicious of anything that applies different processing to different parts of the frame. Besides, it's not just skin tones that suffer from too much enhancement, in my opinion, it's just about everything.

That's also a matter of taste. I personally don't like it: I want to see any spot, un-even-ness and wrinkle on the talent's face. Actors rarely agree...
