View Full Version : Hawk w/prey- Canon XH-A1
Steve Nunez November 9th, 2006, 06:53 PM Went out today with the A1 and caught this on video- 1st attempt with A1 outdoors. I'll post better setup videos in the future.
(Of course compressed and reduced size)

Alex Leith November 9th, 2006, 07:15 PM Very nice!
Adam Reuter November 9th, 2006, 11:46 PM Very cool nature footage! Love the music and sound effects!
Mark Williams November 10th, 2006, 07:14 AM Hi Steve,
Amazing clip. I remember some hawk footage you posted a couple of years ago (I think it was you). I am really looking hard at the A1. After using a GL-1, wearing it out, and then switching to the Pany DVC30, I found that I really miss that 20x lens and that nice warm/saturated Canon look.
Regards,
Monte Raynor November 10th, 2006, 11:21 AM This was absolutely a good catch. I would love to be able to shoot like this. Can you tell me how your camera was setup? I am trying to figure out the focus system on this camera.
Thanks,
CMR
Bill Pryor November 10th, 2006, 12:53 PM Excellent shots. Was it 24F?
Barry Gribble November 10th, 2006, 01:10 PM I like the shot a lot. It may just be on the web, but it does seem a little dark to me... like it was exposed for the sky, not the hawk. I would have rather gotten more detail in the bird, and blown our the sky a bit.
How does it look on a monitor? On the LCD?
Thanks for sharing.
Bill Pryor November 10th, 2006, 01:32 PM Exposure looked great on my laptop. I was amazed at the latitude there--great detail in the hawk yet good sky exposure. I just flipped on the color bars, and my screen is adjusted well.
Steve Nunez November 10th, 2006, 03:34 PM Thanks for the nice words guys.
Since it was the first outting and I was eager to get some footage- I shot it in Auto mode but in 30F.
I did override the exposures to keep highlights in check- It's much better to shoot with the ND filter on and use high shutter speeds for more precise exposures and balance this with aperture.....also auto mode tends to boost contrast just a tad bit higher than I'd like- but it's really good so far. The best setup is full manual and balance the aperture and shutter for highlight clipping.
Again thanks guys, this is a learning curve that's fun to learn!
Steve Nunez November 10th, 2006, 03:52 PM Here's a clip showing what happened when I tried to brighten the exposure- I ended up getting slight highlight clipping in the extreme edges of the hawks left side of the head, as well as a blown out sky.....a variety of ND filters would have helped.....

Barry Gribble November 10th, 2006, 04:06 PM Steve,
Yeah, that's interesting... much less contrast there. Beautiful camera, but it is still DV lattitude.
Thanks for sharing.
Noel Evans November 10th, 2006, 05:35 PM Steve,
Yeah, that's interesting... much less contrast there. Beautiful camera, but it is still DV lattitude.
Thanks for sharing.
Steve nice shot, so lucky to get that one. Great moment to catch.
As far as latitude goes, Im getting far more latitude from this camera than I did on any DV cam. Steves shot is simply overexposed here. A polariser would make the world of difference on that shot.
Steve Nunez November 10th, 2006, 05:59 PM A polarizer is on my list- thanks!
Noel Evans November 10th, 2006, 06:01 PM BTW Steve I watched your sexy girl clip - you are one talented artist.
Graham Bernard November 11th, 2006, 02:23 AM Steve! How the hell are you?!?? We still, staying with Canon? Huh?
When I saw "Steve Nunez" and your Hawk-ing I had to go and get 'em. Must be 3 years back now?
Yes, the A1 has me pinned against the wall at the moment, as most likely being my "next" 16:9 camera - PLUS those aperture+zoom rings.
Tell me, I'm seeing your piece thru MOV player and it looks ever so slightly stretched horiz? It could be me, but it looks kinda 17:9? Is this WIDESCREEN for +16:9? If so does MOV player do this?
Please tell me that tearing and ripping "scrunching" sound was some Foley work you added? Was that being picked up by your mics?
Great work!! - Still punching with my XM2 here!
Steve Nunez November 11th, 2006, 06:59 AM Hey Graham, yeap still a Canon fan. When raw M2T clips are exported to HDV via MpegStreamclip they don't display in QT correctly because of the 16:9 flag- so I resized it and probably stretched it a bit- and exported at that size- hence the "stretched" .mov
The crackling was added afterwards as all I heard was "city" noise and didn't want that.
Hey Noel- thanks for the compliment.....I try!
Graham- check out an A1- you'll like it.
