View Full Version : How can I separate audio from video on Final Cut Express HD? I want to do voice over

I recorded something on mini dv using the onboard microphone. I want to be able to either mute or remove some of the audio and I don't know how to do it on Final Cut Express (or even iMovie if that is possible). I am using an iMac.

Anyone know if this can be done?

Thank you.

Gilbert

Of course you can do this on Final Cut!

To un-link video and audio go to "Sequence > Linked Selection" and uncheck it. The short-cut is shift/L. Then delete the video track.

This is a fairly basic operation - maybe you should consider doing the tutorial which comes with the package?

Thanks a lot Chris! I just got the iMac and software four days ago and I am waiting for my training video to arrive on Tuesday from http://www.digitalmediatraining.com/.

I just a little impatient and wanted to try it out!

No worries!

I'm pretty sure Apple supplies a sample tutorial DVD with Final Cut Express (or maybe it's just the Final Cut Studio?). If you've got that, maybe it's worth having a look at?

Another answer to your question would be to drag the new video layer over the top of the original video layer.

Good luck with Final Cut - you'll love it!

Chris!

you can also individually unlink audio and video by selecting the clip and go to the modify - link menu. I prefer this method as it keeps everything else linked and I don't accidentally leave linked selection off and move a bunch of clips out of sync.
