What ever happened to this piece of gadgetry?

Was being talked up then dropped off the radar.....or am i just out of the loop and it's already available?.... and how much is it?

"To further enhance the ability to utilize multiple types of lenses, JVC has also created an exclusive optional lens adapter – HZ-CA13U – specifically designed for the 1/3” bayonet mount of JVC ProHD camcorders which enables the use of 16mm film prime lenses with a PL (Positive Lock) mount to address the needs of the cinematography community. The GY-HD200 is also capable of inverting the image from a prime lens so that special editing functionality is not required for correct recording of the image."

Hey Carl can we get some info?

The HZ-CA13U project is very much alive and underway. This is a very complex piece of optics, and our factory wants to make sure it is right before release.

With our engineers being very busy bringing the GY-HD250U and studio accessories to market, as well as finalizing the GY-HD200U, the HZ-CA13U has been a little delayed. The latest I heard was end of November for first import, but that is an estimate. We'd rather be late with it than ship it in a less than finished state.

Hello Carl- I had to jump in here-
Any information on the particulars of the adapter?
Depth of field info., etc.?
Thanks for all your help in these forums!

I'm very interested in this thing myself - would love to hear any tidbits that could be revealed, no matter how small. I'm getting tired of drooling over the camera phone photo I took of the prototype at NAB :)

Hi,

Sorry, about all I know is that it's a 1/3" bayonet mount to 16mm PL lens adaptor, and it's designed to retain the same angle of view as the PL lens in most cases. The picture will come out inverted to the camera, but with the image flip of the GY-HD250U and GY-HD200U, you can correct this in real time.

It's basically this or an M2 and that's why I'm desperate to know the rough estimated price so I can either say yes or no. The M2 sells for a grand and a half for the PL mount package, I hope this is no more expensive than that.

Howdy from Texas,

My apologies for these sketchy, shaky pics... they're just some quick and dirty snapshots I took at NAB2006 last April during Michael Horton's big Final Cut Pro blowout on Wednesday night over at the Rio or wherever it was. By this time I had already had a few drinks, and was hanging out back in the lobby near the bar (as usual) while Craig Yanagi of JVC was up on stage presenting this thing. He was on his way out and briefly showed me what I had missed. The attached audio file is Craig's verbal description of the adapter (and Craig if you're reading this... thanks for the quick preso, and sorry for the poor quality of these images).

A message to our ProHD supporters on DV Info:

Thanks very much for all of your support. Here's the very latest word on the HZ-CA13U...

An operational prototype of the HZ-CA13U is scheduled to be shown at DV Expo West. It will be flown in directly from our factory in Japan. So, pending any importation issues, we plan to have it on display with a 16mm film lens.

Regarding the physical attributes, it is as Carl has described - the adapter is designed to retain the 16mm lens' field of view. Depth of field, however, will vary by the lens. The adapter is comprised of all precision optics with no moving parts, so loss of light is minimal. Mount is PL (Precision Lock).

Pricing will be under $5000.00, and only available in the US. Availability is planned for December.

The HZ-CA13U can be used with all of the ProHD cameras, however the GY-HD200's and GY-HD250's are the only camcorders to be able to directly record the image right-side-up with its image inversion technology. The 200 series also have dynamic shading compensation to help provide prestine imagery.

One final note - we will also debut the new GY-HD200U, planned to be dressed with the HZ-CA13U.

We'll be in booth #603 at DV Expo. Please come by and check out the new gear.

Many Thanks,
Craig

Thx for the info Craig

I have a Canon 8-64 Super 16 zoom I used to use on my Aaton.

Correct me if I'm wrong but with this lens, I would not get the reach of the 16-1 provided with the camera, but how much wider would it be?
Also, being a super 16 lens is there any advantage / disadvantage over a 16mm lens on the 101e. Thx

Craig Yanagi

Geoff:

Unfortunately, the adapter is so new that we don't even have specifications yet.

From my brief knowledge gained in the design of the adapter, I've been informed that the field of view for 16mm is different from 35mm, and that Super16 is more closer to 35mm with regards to FOV.

That being said, the HZ-CA13U had been designed with 16mm film lenses in mind, taking into consideration all of the 16mm film cameras being used in film institutions, and also considering that there are a large number of DP's who own at least one 16mm film lens, probably hibernating somewhere. The HZ-CA13U would enable this glass to "see the light" once more.

It's a great time to be an independent filmmaker...

Hi Jemore. I don't read it that way, it seems to me you can use the HD100/101/110/111 however the image will be flipped.

JVC has no plans to ship these outside of the U.S? Oh well I guess you can't win them all.

Let's hope overseas users can at least order from US dealers.

HD100 and 200 use the same lens mount, it's a standard 1/3" bayonet mount used by ENG lenses. And lenses or lens adaptors that fit on an HD200 or ANY standard 1/3" camera will fit on HD100. 1/2" and 2/3" broadcast lenses are usable using an adaptor, in fact FSN North is using a 1/2" adaptor to put a lens from one of their old DVCPRO cameras on their HD100 to replace the stock lens.

Bad News / Good News:

- We won't have the 2nd rev. of the HZ-CA13U at DV Expo West.

- We will have the first prototype with optics on hand.

Just to clarify, as Stephan has stated, the HZ-CA13U will work on any 1/3" bayonet mount. There are no electronics involved with the mount. Images from prime lenses will hit the camera imager upside-down.

FSN North is most probably using the ACM-12 1/2" to 1/3" adapter so that they can recycle their glass. That's great news. The image on ProHD camcorders, or any camera for that matter, will reciprocate when you use good glass.

For those planning to use a lens adapter like the HZ-CA13 on a HD110 or HD111, the latest beta version of MpegStreamclip (http://www.squared5.com) (1.8b2) now includes a rotation/inversion function in the export pane. If you plan to use an intermediate codec during post, this will save you tonnes of render time in your NLE.

I would guess that "180 and Flip" would be the right choice.

Not that I know of. Mpegstreamclip handles it all in one step, so there should be no change in quality.

How did you find that? Just by searching the JVC site for HD200? I'm surprised they posted the press release on the website so early.

If the price for the HZ-CA13U is $3995, then it will sell well! That's less than half of a full P+S Mini35 setup, without the fuss.

I'm very excited at the potential of this device, especially at that price.
JVC seems very committed to the low-budget filmmaker who wishes to make big-budget images.

I took a look at the images posted there of the HD200. I like the fact that they decided to adopt the BNC connectors and form factor of the HD250.
I think it is priced right if you consider the closest comparison with similar features is the XL-H1 priced about the same.
Would you have ever dreamed of a 24P HD camera under $10000 with these features two years ago?
A revolution is happening in the professional video marketplace, and I think the fact that Sony is selling their XDCAMs at such a low price is proof.

Two years ago, a 24p HD camera selling for less then $20.000 to $40.000 would already have been unthinkable. Would anyone have guessed they could even pour it into such a small form-factor? It's like the XL-series with a real lens, but much better images....

Based on the press releases, the 200 is only 300 usd less than the 250 when you exclude a lens? Is that a misprint?

On the windows side, Cineforms HD link does a realtime 180 flip during capture. I think DvRack offers it too.

In reference to this new device, is arri pl mount and pl mount considered the same?

Went back to the url listing and they changed the price...

"The suggested list price for the GY-HD200U camcorder equipped with a Fujinon 16x lens is $8,995. The camcorder is also available without a lens as the GY-HD200CHU with a suggested list price of $7,995. Delivery of both camcorders is in late November.

The suggested list price of the HZ-CA13U is $4,395 and delivery is expected to begin in December 2006."

Makes more sense now:).

Check this out: HD200 with 16mm DOF adaptor and PL prime (http://homepage.mac.com/timdashwood/.Pictures/NAB2006/HD200-PL_A.JPG) are almost the same length as HD200 with kit lens.
Nowhere near to HD200 with M2 attached (http://web.mac.com/mikedcurtis/iWeb/Site/NAB2006Day4pt1_files/IMG_0057.jpg) :)...

As a set of six Optar Illumina T1.3 super 16mm primes cost less than $8000 it`s getting really iteresting for indies.

I wonder how will the lightloss and bokeh will be with this lens adaptor?
How`s about getting rid of the dust as PL mount is quite deep it won`t be easy to clean any protective glass inside the adaptor

One uncommon thing about this lens adaptor is the absence of relay lens iris so for depth of field control one definetly needs a matte box with additional ND filters.

Any footage or stills from the prototype yet?

I may well be wrong as to the technology but in general terms at least, this would not be the first time JVC has visited this idea.

There were two cameras, heads only, not camera/recorders, Model KY-F50 which enabled a 1/3" CCD to see a "C-Mount" lens as if it was a 2/3" CCD, Model KY-F32 which enabled a 1/3" CCD to see a B3 mount lens as if it was a 1/2" CCD.

Looked just now: the least you can get them for at eBay is $13,000. :(

Are prices getting higher because of the upcoming JVC adapter? :)

Wow, that's more than I expected. We are talking Mini35 territory almost.
Looking at the high-rez pictures it's hard to believe there's no ground glass since it seems to have a relay lens on the end. For sure a back focus of some sort, which makes me think it's a relay. If there's a relay there's a GG. It's looking like a 16mm version of the Cinemek with a relay to me. But 4 grand? If it indeed doesn’t have a GG it better really keep the same FOV and DOF of S16mm or else…

20,000? Where? Is that the gold plated version? Heck, make that diamond!
A brande new Mini35 cost a little under 11k.
But used ones can be had on the 4-5k range. The old 300 series for even less.
I wonder why didn't they just make a straight PL mount adapter instead of this gizmo. At least it would be cheaper. Who wants a Mini16 for 4k?

OK, yes I guess I was only aware of the PRO35 pricing. Even so, the mini35 is around 10Gs with all the pieces you'd have to buy to connect it to the HD100 and a lens mount. eBay might be cheaper. The mini35 rig is very different though as far as weight and length, the 16mmm JVC adapter looks to me much more manageable with a 16mm prime lens. (think hand held shots or tight corners, portability, etc.) If it's as good as the mini35 in terms of what it gives you and it's in the same price range I'd opt for the HZ-CA13U.

List price is $4395.00. Remember, this is not just an empty tube. There are some high-grade optics inside that allow the 16mm format lens to retain the same angle of view and DOF on our video cameras, as if it were on a film camera. This is not an easy task, thus the cost.

I understand this, but a highgrade relay lens and just for 16mm lenses. It just seems to be to high in competition with 35 adapters out there. I don't know, I had my hopes up, with the price, I'm only leaning towards Zacuto's 35 adapter now.

Tim isn't there a difference between the Mini35 and the HZ-CA13U? The Mini35 allows 35mm lenses, as opposed to 16mm. I wish they had a way to mount Nikon lenses directly to the HD200 so you don't lose the amount of light you do with the mini35. Do you lose light with the HZ-CA13U? Anyone knows?
