View Full Version : Fujinon Wide angle converter
Brian Ladue October 21st, 2006, 02:18 PM Does anyone have experience with the Fujinon Wide angle converter for the stock 16X5.5 lens?
Does it degrade image quality? How wide is it? any info would be appreciated, i'm looking to get wider angle without spending 13,000 Can on the wide lens !
Thanks
Tim Dashwood October 21st, 2006, 02:47 PM The 0.82x Wide converter works well for zoom through, and doesn't seem to degrade the image.
The converter effectively turns your 5.5mm lens into approximately a 4.5mm lens.
The adapter can also "live" on the lens and the hood slips right over it.
I've attached a field of view comparison of the stock lens with and without the converter, compared to the expensive wide angle 13x3.5 lens. This was based on a real world test, and not calculated, so the adapter doesn't appear as wide as you might think.
Eric Darling October 21st, 2006, 04:19 PM I would agree with Tim on his assessment. Once I put the WA converter on the lens, I've never once had the need to take it off. The stock lens is pretty long, even with the converter on there. I think it's a fair compromise for the price.
Still, I'm thinking more and more of the 3.5 lens to obtain the better glass and those nice high-end wide angle images that my clients tend to crave. It's either that or a new GY-HD200, now that its release is imminent.... What to do....
Adam Oas October 21st, 2006, 04:38 PM I've only taken mine off one time since it went on...
I needed just a touch more zoom.
I couldn't justify the cost of the real wide angle, but it was pretty easy to talk management into a few hundred bucks for a little bit better wide end.
Plus it can be replaced a lot cheaper than the full lens so it could really save your bacon someday if you didn't have a clear filter living on the front of the lens anyways.

Another question *does the converter also add to the telephoto as well as a wider angle?*
Stephan Ahonen October 21st, 2006, 06:29 PM No, the wide angle adaptor makes both the tele and wide ends of the lens wider.

We also use the WA adapter and it stays on for most of our outdoor shots, however I remove it when shooting green screen, we found it did degrade the image a fractional amount. I could only tell the difference in a controlled studio environment where every pixel was scrutinized. It's good glass and still worth the money, more so considering the alternatives.
