I guess I need to get the upgraded quicktime to watch the HDV footage. Anyway to downgrade it?

I am on Mac, I use VLC player.

DIVX is the most reliable player for HDV files.

Looks like true progressive chips to me. There is little to no resolution loss between the 50i and 25p versions. His face gets a little softer but that's about it. I'm sure that's a huge improvement regarding loss of quality when de-interlacing Sony's first generation HDV camera footage. I'm going to make a bold statment and say from this preliminary footage that it does NOT look as good as the FX1/Z1, but we will see in the coming weeks.

People tend to get attached to a brand like Sony which is why this/these new camera(s) will sell. If you rationally think about it, the new Canon is a far better deal: For the same price it has XLR and far more manual settings. The psudo-24p is nearly as good as the real thing, and -at least in 50/60i - it has a better (sharper) image.

I'm sticking to my FX1 for now, the biggest kill on the V1/FX7 is the 1/4" chips which won't cut it for shallow DOF.

The Digital Extender Feature might help with that problem. It will extend the focal length by 1.5 times from what I read.

I think thats just digital zoom, I could never reccomend it for anything serious to preserve quality. Sure the Zoom is bigger at 20x but the extra room required to position yourself further from the subject and zoom in more will make it redundant for DOF work. 20x is far nicer than 12x for everything else.

No, it's not "just digital zoom." There's a bit more to it than that...but you'll have to wait until more information and images are allowable by Sony.

Aha this is interesting. Thanks for that little snippet Spot. I had thought too that it was just a new name for a digital crop, but reading between the lines a bit it sounds to me like they're applying some clever image-processing or algorithm to that feature.

I'd guess that you'd like to expand a little on it, but totally understand that, right now, you can't until you get the go ahead. (any idea how long it will be before you get the green light for releasing results of your testing?)

I've seen other footage from the camera and it's amazing. What this footage looked like made me realize I can definitely benefit from the camera, as can many others.

it was friday afternoon. Still was a business day here. Unless happy hour started early!!!! But Monday will be good.

Friday afternoon is the single worst business day and time I can think of to launch a new product. The first part of the week (Monday to Wednesday) is much better for that sort of thing.

True,,,everyone wants to go home. Good point.

Companies, etc., always release bad news on Friday evenings, around 6 PM. You'll forget by Monday. And unless it's ground-shaking, no one wants to cover it.
