Has anyone had a chance to watch the new release of Brazil from the Criterion Collection? Is the difference in image quality significant enough to warrant buying a new copy (for someone that would put it in their top 3 movies of all time, that is)?

Comcast Cable has the new, widescreen edition with added material on their free On Demand movie selection right now. I wonder if this is the same version as the DVD you are describing? I may watch it soon and report on it.

I have the Criterion DVD. You probably know that it includes the shorter "Love Conquers All" cut and hence offers invaluable material for the completist. If you are asking whether the visual quality of the director's cut is any better, that would be hard to say since I only have the Criterion version. I think it is a box set worth owning for a film-maker because of all the supplements. If you are really curious, we could compare screen shots and bit rates of the audio and video streams.

Yeah, the box set has been around for a few years. It is indeed a fantastic collection. I've worn down those discs pretty good. : )
However, what I am referring to is a new version of that box set. Yesterday Criterion released a new transfer of the first disc that they say looks better than ever before. From what I understand, the content on Disc 2 & 3 remains completely the same.
The first disc can be bought separate for not too much, but I'm trying to find out if it's really worth it.
Thanks.
