Who here is shocked to find that all current Sony AVCHD High-Def cam's CMOS sensor is only 1434K effective pixels in AVCHD recording?
All this means to me: Lower Quality. Sony could've raised it to the HC1's 1983K effective pixels. Even the HC3 has only 1493K effective pixels! What's going on here?

Um, consumer cameras? Seems that hanging your hopes on consumer market cameras to ALWAYS go onward and upward as far as specs might not be wise sport.

^Sure it's not but the average joe doesn't even have money to rent a Z1 for one day!
Most people don't have $7000 to spend.

The HC3 looks pretty good so I have hopes for this camera. Though the HV10 has better detail.

Hello,
I've been thinking of the difference in resolution between a great consumer 3CCD videocamera vs the cheap color filter single chip HDV/AVCHD-cameras.
It seems to me that it wouldn't be that much higher resolution in the first generation of single chip HDV/AVCHD cameras.
Assuming a sampling of fullcolors per pixel (without pixelshift etc) would give about 0.5MP in an PAL widescreen camera ?
The Sony HC1 and HC3 have a 1440x1080 CFA based sampling which should give a luminance resolution of 0.75MP and lower chrominance resolution.
The Canon would be aroung 1MP lumince resolution with its 1920x1080 based image.
(Please note that I've not lowered the resolution due to interlace or any other effect here. I just assume that they don't downscale the image to 1920/1440x1080, it's a crop of the sensors full resolution.)

HC1 has a full 1920x1440 sensor.

The only time the HC1 uses the full sensor to media is with digital stills. It's crops top and bottom for video.

Yes but the sensor itself is a full sensor in the same sense as the hv10.
