Austin Meyers May 12th, 2008, 11:14 PM 1000ish... Probably closer to 2000ish for the entire project. And I did literally everything... Creative concepts Shooting editing graphics etc. My bro helped for a day or two to cut some cityscapes out until it bogged his g5 down too much.
I started prepro in mid dec shot most of the city plates in early jan, shot the green screen in feb and finished the live action stuff in march/April. So yeah I lost count a while ago but about 5 mos of pretty grueling stuff. And I learned the limits of the FCS workflow pathways which cost me many many hours if not weeks.
Eugenia Loli-Queru May 21st, 2008, 12:23 AM At last, it happened. My first music video clip. This is the best I could do with the amount of footage I had in my disposal (I shot only 2/3s of a tape as we were there for less than two hours). View in HD, or download the high quality HD version of the video here: http://vimeo.com/1036463

Tomas Chinchilla July 6th, 2008, 11:36 PM Really good footage, can you share your camcorder settings.
Chris Leffler July 7th, 2008, 12:07 AM Besides change exposure for a lot of the shots I had the shutter set too 1/1000.
Robert Petersen July 8th, 2008, 12:06 AM Here is a short video with the HV30 in 30p mode. I used a 35 year old set of close-up lenses made by Vivitar that were relics from my first 35mm camera. Depth of field was extremely narrow and of course the instant autofocus had to be shut off. The spider scene was zoomed in during post.

Eugenia Loli-Queru July 20th, 2008, 03:42 AM "You've Gotta Want It" is performed by Dolorata, from their debut album "Believer".
The music video was filmed with a stock Canon HV20 and a tripod in just 2.5 hours. On some shots the WD-H43 wide-angle adapter and 2x500Watt lights were used. Recorded with 25% sped-up audio in plain 1080/60i & Cinemode/Neutral color settings, and then the footage was slowed down 25% in post to match the original audio. Edited with Sony Vegas 8 Pro, color graded with Magic Bullet Looks. De-interlaced with interpolation ("blend fields" creates ghosting), and exported in 24p.

UPDATE: Currently Vimeo has a server problem, they expect it to be fixed later today.
UPDATE 2: It's back up.
Matthew Ebenezer July 27th, 2008, 05:18 AM An overcast and rainy Sunday afternoon in our town. For some reason I happened to have my HV30+Brevis at home plus some lenses so my wife and I filled in part of the afternoon filming this little clip.
http://www.vimeo.com/1415388
The HV30+Brevis combo keeps impressing me the more time I spend with it.
Not many wives would willingly submit themselves to a macro lens so extra credit to Katie for this one :)
Lenses used: 50mm 1.8 and 60mm 2.8 Macro

Jack Zhang August 15th, 2008, 09:09 PM Jack Zhang's first Canon HV30 24p footage (Raw footage of route to IG) on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1531523)
I do mind you that this is raw footage and was only processed to do a inverse telecine.
There is minor interlaced combing in certain clips in this video but using Virtualdubmod is a good solution for people without Cineform or Cinema Tools. But because the cadences do break, you must process every single shot to output as a different file. (It would be easier with HDV scene detection, but that is quite buggy). Process it alltogether with the different cadences and there is a risk of combing. (as I learned with this video)
Richard Hunter August 16th, 2008, 04:00 AM The good thing about shooting video in Chiangmai in the rainy season is that you don't have to deal with so much contrast due to bright sunlight (ha ha there isn't any). The not so good thing is the rain of course.
These shots were taken in August 2008 with a Canon HV30 camcorder in 25F, converted to 24P on final output.

Dennis Wood September 25th, 2008, 07:57 PM One our guys here Nick (currently a film student) headed out last week and took a piece of advice in getting some pretty cool macro shots. He removed his Brevis flip from the HV30, and affixed our non-flip achromat. This was the result. Forgive the watermark.

That is what it is for. Don't wear it out on 35mm adaptors. David Attenborough. Eat your heart out.
So travels the wheel full circle and there is a high quality accessory which might not otherwise have been conveniently available for the camera type.
Gerry Curtis September 26th, 2008, 10:21 AM Hello,
This is my first posting in this neck of the woods.
First in a series of videos I shot on a photo/video trip to Morocco this summer-I bought the HV30 just for this trip. Shot over 2 mornings in Fes, Morocco, the small form factor of the camera was a great way to get a lot of shots that I wouldn't have been able to get with a full size camera.
After editing in FCP I sent the HDV timeline to Color and then output as ProRes, but for the next video will reverse telecine and convert to ProRes in Compressor before editing, which I think is a much better workflow.

Richard Hunter November 9th, 2008, 08:58 AM This is a short video of the old border crossing at Rosh Hanikra in northern Israel, showing the spectacular cliffs and grotto.
This was shot with a Canon HV30. The ND4 filter really helps to keep the lens near it's sweet spot. Colours are as they came from the camera.

Peter Szilveszter November 10th, 2008, 05:49 PM Hi everyone
We recently went to Cairns for a little holiday and so I took my trusty Hv30 and the RNG35 adapter and put together a little video to capture how we felt about our time there. I have to say Cairns and the surround area has a huge amount of opportunity to capture some wonderful footage, so one day I'll be going back to just dedicate the whole time to film.

Allan Black November 10th, 2008, 07:17 PM Nice atmospheric piece Peter, at 1.41 where exactly is that up there? Thx.
Cheers.
Peter Szilveszter November 10th, 2008, 11:07 PM Thanks mate, that's Paranella Park a few k's past Innisfail, pretty cool to see some Spanish architecture that's looks more like something you'd find in South America.
Jeff Anselmo November 11th, 2008, 11:38 PM Really beautiful stuff! Sign me up for the next helicopter tour :) Like Allan, I also wondered where that place was at around 1:41; Paranella Park absolutely looks magical.
Which lens did you use with your RNG35, and how do you like using the adapter so far?
Best,
Peter Szilveszter November 12th, 2008, 05:25 AM hehe, yeah I've been to Paranella park twice already it is just magical, If I had a whole day there just to film it I would :)
The RNG35 does quiet well, its not flipped so the shots are harder to take but will be getting a flip soon.
I used a variety of lenses, They were Olympus 50mm, Vivitar 28mm and a Tamron 28-70mm which I decided after the trip to use it very minimally, just way too much vignetting anything bellow 40mm, I'll use it for macro and 50-70mm shots but I'll have to invest in a much better zoom lens, and well nothing beats prime lenses.
Glenn Thomas November 12th, 2008, 09:16 PM This video was shot back in July for a local hip hop MC by the name of Ambientz who records his tracks at my studio. I asked if he wanted a music video, and a few days later we shot it! The shoot was a bit over an hour at the beach down the road. No preparation, just turned up with the camera and shot it.
Shot on the HV20 as always with the SG Pro Rev3, both working flawlessly. All natural lighting with no reflectors or anything like that, but some secondary colour correction in Vegas was used to brighten his face in a few parts as well adding more colour to the sky too.
It can be viewed and downloaded (if you're signed in) at Ambientz - 'Crush' music video on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/1909873) or Ambientz - 'Crush' music video By Glenn Thomas On ExposureRoom (http://exposureroom.com/0c5c84962fd048f1ab0b6c9fa79b031c/)

Eugenia Loli-Queru December 16th, 2008, 07:27 PM I completely re-cut and re-graded the video because the original was hopeless... For the footage I have, I think I did a better job this time.
Peter Szilveszter January 8th, 2009, 06:44 PM Hi everyone
I couldn't help taking the camera for our Christmas do's and I put a clip together, all shot on HV20 and RNG35 adapter, this is my record for editing/grading speed clocked just under 3 hours.

Ken Diewert January 11th, 2009, 01:13 AM Hey Peter,
I noticed that you had this setup. I was watching on the RNG35 vimeo group.
I've just bought an hv20 to back-up my XLh1 and wanted to ask a couple of questions if you're keeping track of this thread. The footage is stunning btw. I've been looking into a 35mm adapter system and don't want to have a complex full time set-up.
How do you support the weight of your system, do you just hold the rig by the barrel of the adapter?
What do you do when it sits on a tripod?
can the same RNG unit be easily adapted adapted for a larger camera(A1 or H1)?
I saw a note somewhere that you had a brevis as well - how do they compare?
I'm sure I have more footage but that will get me started.
Thanks in advance
Ken Diewert January 11th, 2009, 01:30 AM OK, I just read another post where you mentioned that you use the brevis flip with the rng.Another question was how are you monitoring? with the stock LCD monitor?
Peter Szilveszter January 11th, 2009, 04:28 PM I use stock LCD and have the peaking function going (h1 should have it as well). As far as bigger camera I have only gone as far as the A1 which is not issue at all. (watch Samantha and Emir STD was shot on A1/RNG) I have rail support with the shoulder mount and the pistol grip attachment and it works quiet well all Cavision product. I have also ordered a steadystick to help the shot steadiness.
I am not sure with the H1 if you can get adapters that work with removing the h1 stock lens, maybe have a search in Alternative imaging Method section to see if how it works with the H1, as I remember vaguely that one of the adapter companies like Redrock have something for doing it like that (could be wrong). But besides that yo should be able to attach something on the normal lens, it would just make it extra long :P
Ken Diewert January 11th, 2009, 08:17 PM Thanks Peter,
I'm thinking about just rigging one or the other with an adapter I think the hv20 may be simpler/cheaper - if it can be modded to fit the h1, that's a bonus. I know a lot of guys think the hd monitor is a necessity, but if you can get by with the stock lcd and peaking, it saves a lot of extra hassle (power supply, weight, cost).
I saw one of your mates down under had an adapter on his hv30 (i think). It looked pretty well suited to run n gun.
Peter Szilveszter January 11th, 2009, 09:51 PM Thanks Peter,

I think the monitor is great if you are shooting a a film/music clip etc where every shot can be set up as best as possible but run and gun its just too much hastle. Not all my shots are perfectly in focus but I think that's more to do with shooting real time so running out of time to get it perfect then anything else.
Yeah hv30/Adapter is a very good, lighter combo, I personally like the A1/Adapter combo as the rig is still fairly light and the achromat I use suits the A1 better then the HV but atm I can't afford to buy another A1.
Eugenia Loli-Queru January 19th, 2009, 04:33 PM A video from our yesterday's visit to Santa Cruz's Beach Boardwalk. Unfortunately, no tripods were allowed, so all shots are either handheld or with the camera sitting on top of a trash can. Came out alright though, I think.

Alain Lumina January 27th, 2009, 10:50 AM HI,
Thanks for posting your video, It really is lovely and moody. ( I know that's vague, but if we could say it all in words we wouldn't need cinema!)
I'm shopping for a compact. If you even know how to launch Color ,you know more than me!--you may able to help me- one of the things I don't quite get, is how to crush the noise out of the blacks? It is working in some parts of your video but not others.
I see two different situations in your video as examples:
When ( ~00:10) the man ( you?) are sitting with the black net drapes flowing in the breeze (nice poetic use of a small detail from environment)-- to the left of the frame I see some annoying noise, just to the left of where the holes in the drapes are visible.
But then in another shot at about 00:30 there is a large section of black in the frame in which the blacks seem nice and crushed-- really black.
As a film nut obsessed with Noir, I fracking love black, and wonder is some kind of threshold sensing noise reduction in software, besides upping contrast aggressively, which we can use to flatten out those blacks?
Thanks so much again, please don't take this as criticism, I am not near your level yet!
Gerry Curtis January 27th, 2009, 01:23 PM Hi Alain,
Glad you liked the video. For starters, here's a slightly updated version on exposure room with an improved sound mix:
Fes Morning in July By Gerry Curtis On ExposureRoom (http://exposureroom.com/members/gerry_c.aspx/assets/c8f11a34488b4f09ae9fa939cbd7a539/)
XR does a much nicer compression, but in both cases, compressing for the web greatly increases the noise in the blacks, and in this case I was more interested in optimizing for HD rather than people's computer monitors.
If I wanted to make this more web friendly I would play with curves and the trick would be to keep detail in the subject, which is also dark, while crushing the blacks. Or I could have put a power window over the left portion and just crushed that down.
Another alternative would be to crush the blacks (master pedestal) in the camera, which is what I did in the church scenes from my (old) demo reel. Since the scenes were nicely exposed I got very clean, noise free blacks with little work in post:
http://digitalkilnstudios.com/DEMOREEL.mov
My best piece of advice would be to just get out and shoot a lot and learn by trial and error! Play with photoshop and whatever NLE system you're working with.
Cheers,
Gerry
