View Full Version : Canon HV series -- various sample clips Eugenia Loli-Queru July 22nd, 2007, 05:40 PM >a subject with that that had really nice composition Thank God for that polarizer too. ;-) Fergus Anderson July 25th, 2007, 03:15 PM Hi all I recently took some footage of the Red Arrows and have put a small sample here: http://hv20.info/yopu/Red Arrows Sample.wmv I am intending to edit about 4 mins of footage together in the coming days. It was shot in 25p cine mode and high shutter speed (bright day). It wasnt a planned shoot really. I didnt walk to the best spot and didnt have any time to prepare - it was just a bit of impomtu filming, some parts turned out to be alright! All shot handheld. Anyway here is a 40 sec clip showing some of the more shaky/closeup footage. It gives you an idea of what 25p/high shutter speed looks like when handheld at full telephoto and moving quick. The Sample is 42.8 MB in size (720p wm9 38 sec at 8mb/s). Might be of interest to anyone into planes.... Eugenia Loli-Queru July 25th, 2007, 07:05 PM Amazing, thanks for sharing! Ben Troxell July 29th, 2007, 08:49 PM Really smooth for 25p. David Cole August 3rd, 2007, 07:18 PM "24p Tv 1/48th CP off available light consisted of a fluorescent fixture on the ceiling, and a few incandescences on the walls, sound was run out of a mixer to a hosa xlr to mini cable" I understand most of your settings: 24p, shutter priority with the shutter set at 1/48th of a second. But what is "CP"? I've had REALLY noisy low light footage and can't figure out how you guys are getting such good results. I read about the posts how people are happy with the low light results from this camera. Any help?! Thanks! -DC Austin Meyers August 3rd, 2007, 08:06 PM CP is short for custom preset ie vivid, neutral, skin,... and custom the first post i shot in Tv mode, the second set of clips i shot with CINE mode. the CINE mode handles the low light much better as it appears to limit the gain induced (at the expense of shutter speed), the gamma tweaks are better too for low light IMO. whereas the other program modes will induce more gain in order to keep the shutter faster. the first clip i was locking the shutter with the camera pointed at a bright spot as to get the gain down as much as possible, and in cine mode i would just try to get the shutter to 1/24 and then lock the exposure hope that makes sense... Fergus Anderson August 5th, 2007, 05:01 AM Well I finally managed to grab some time last night to piece together some of my Red Arrows footage. This edit is 3 mins 50 long. I have rendered to 720p VC-1 at 7.7mb/s from Vegas. The file is 224mb in size. http://hv20.info/yopu/THE RED ARROWS 720p.wmv It was shot in cine mode at 25p mostly around 120 shutter speed. As you will (quickly!) see it was all shot handheld and mostly at telephoto. It was not a planned shoot but I was fairly pleased with the footage. It has been edited together with a sound track my brother created recently (he is available for project work currently) As you will see I had a play with some options in Vegas.... Let me know what you guys think. Cheers Rob Rollin August 5th, 2007, 06:44 AM Exellent work! I like the different looks alot, they all looked great! Good music too! Rob Fergus Anderson August 5th, 2007, 11:04 AM Thanks Rob - I know some of the looks introduce lots of grain and bleeding etc but I just wanted to do something a little different. Glad you liked the music too :) Thanks for your feedback Fergus Anderson August 7th, 2007, 10:57 AM Here's a screenshot for the contrast settings for one of those extreme contrast scenes: http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/4232/vegassettingsdb9.th.jpg (http://img523.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vegassettingsdb9.jpg) Dave Daniels August 13th, 2007, 07:51 AM We spent the weekend at The Great Wolf Lodge in Willimsburg, VA this weekend. I took along the HV20 and left the Canon XH-A1 at home. The first thing I cut together is the arcade footage. It was very dark the only lighting was from the games and the overhead lighting was only blacklights. The HV20 did fairly well in low light. Settings used were 24p cinema mode, awb and mostly handheld and some monopod (tight quarters in there). I will also have footage from Busch Gardens, Colonial Williamsburg and the rest of The Great Wolf Lodge. http://gallery.mac.com/daveandkim1#100000 I used Apple's new Web Gallery feature! It's great for forums like this. It comes in three different sizes and you can make them downloadable all with the click of a button!! I love it! Dave www.lefthandmedia.net John M. Graham August 13th, 2007, 01:21 PM Nice video. The HV20 amazes me; the low light performance looks better than my big chunky FX1. I checked out your gear on your website, and I just have to ask... how come every person who uses a M2 Redrock (or something else similar) uses Nikon lenses? I know that the Redrock allows Canon AF lenses... why would you commit such a blasphemy putting a *cringe* Nikon lens over your L series Canon? Dave Daniels August 13th, 2007, 02:11 PM how come every person who uses a M2 Redrock (or something else similar) uses Nikon lenses? I know that the Redrock allows Canon AF lenses... why would you commit such a blasphemy putting a *cringe* Nikon lens over your L series Canon? I really didn't give it much thought. I studied the forums and read the magazine articles of what was giving the best final image. It was overwhelming the positive response the nikon glass received. Thanks for the compliment on the footage! That little camera amazes me. More to come later on today! Dave www.lefthandmedia.net Dave Daniels August 13th, 2007, 06:04 PM Here is some footage I cut together from The Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark. http://gallery.mac.com/daveandkim1#100041 Enjoy! Dave www.lefthandmedia.net Brandon Svec August 13th, 2007, 08:10 PM You say you recorded 24p and cine mode. Did you do anything else to the footage besides capture in iMovie and upload to the web gallery? It looks very nice. I think I may renew my .mac account now.. Joey Atilano August 13th, 2007, 10:49 PM That place looks pretty cool. I wanted to see the kid eat it on the flow rider but not get hurt ,just to see what would happen. Ben Troxell August 14th, 2007, 03:54 PM The beginning creeped me out a little bit. Dave Daniels August 15th, 2007, 10:27 AM You say you recorded 24p and cine mode. Did you do anything else to the footage besides capture in iMovie and upload to the web gallery? It looks very nice. I think I may renew my .mac account now.. No that was it. I think though that iMovie does NOT do 24p so I am sure it came into iMovie 1080 60i. I cut it first in Final Cut and followed the JES Deinterlacer method. Brad Vaughan August 18th, 2007, 07:59 PM Now that is some great footage and editing!!! Loved it! Makes me want to put my airshow footage together now!! Fergus Anderson August 19th, 2007, 02:01 AM Cheers Brad Planes make a good subject. I'm fairly new to Vegas so was just using it as an excuse to have a play with some settings really. I was thinking I might take some of the footage and play with the velocity envelope function - could probably come up with some interesting stuff! Moore August 22nd, 2007, 01:56 PM Very nice looking images. I personally enjoyed the smooth creamy effect of the filter. Gonna have to check it out. Looks like you shot 60i and deinterlaced to 30p? If so, that would have also softened the image just a tad. Eugenia Loli-Queru August 27th, 2007, 01:12 AM This interview was shot this weekend with the Canon HV20. I interview three of the members of the popular alternative rock band Drist (well known for their two songs on the Guitar Hero games for the PS2), while three of their brand new unreleased-yet songs are previewed. YouTube version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXLWMxmQ_84 Here is a better quality version of the video, iPhone/PSP-sized (75 MBs): http://www.gnomefiles.org/files/drist3.mp4 I had trouble with the mono sound recorded by the clip-on mono mic and a bug on Vegas that exported my faded in/out photo slide-show with horrible artifacts, but apart of that, I think it came out pretty well. Feedback is appreciated, of course! Wes Vasher August 27th, 2007, 10:36 AM Uploaded some new pictures from my HV20 here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wesvasher/). Including some CS3 panoramas and a nice shot of the moon at full optical zoom. 1:1 crop of a 1920x1080 digital still. The moon was very bright so I had to set the aperture to 8.0 and turned the exposure dial all the way down. CLICK HERE (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1111/1244725525_a25ec03b57_o.jpg) Daymon Hoffman August 28th, 2007, 01:12 AM Wes, Cool! I'm about to (try) shoot some footage of the moon tonight. Any tips on set up? (unfort i didnt get a warning so no time to test bar on the job later tonight). Wes Vasher August 28th, 2007, 08:21 AM It's very bright so if you have an ND filter that might help, I forgot mine at home but was able to still get a good shot. I toggled through the various white balance presets to get a look. I set my camera to tape mode and used the photo button so I could utilize the Cine mode preset. Steve MacDonald August 28th, 2007, 08:36 AM Eugenia, I thought this looked pretty cool! The footage looked good, the audio sounded good, my only input would be I would have varied the shot alot more on the interviews and I always, always, hide that mic cord. I know that may sound ridculous, but seeing a mic cord dangling from the talent just looks bad to me. Anyway, just my 2 cents worth, all in all, I think you did a great job!! Eugenia Loli-Queru August 28th, 2007, 10:59 AM Thanks Steve! Yup, I forgot to hide the mic cord in the first two interviews of Tyson and Brian, but I remembered it for Dave's interview the next day... ;-) Rob Gregory-Browne August 31st, 2007, 04:39 PM ...how beautiful the image is on the HV20. On the flip-out screen, on my monitor, and especially hooked up via HDMI to my plasma. When I saw the footage on the plasma, I wanted to cry. I had shot it in 24p and almost thought I was looking at film. Only better somehow. Amazing. 1000 bucks. I never would've believed it. Wes Vasher September 28th, 2007, 06:31 AM Thanks Daymon. Here's a shot of the Beetle. I shot it at 60i, converted to 60p and slowed down to 24p for slow motion. It's interesting to see how the bug moves the sand back with his legs. http://www.mediafire.com/?dg19zitgo10 Zac Crosby September 28th, 2007, 08:01 AM Well this is my blog i've had for shooting this, so i'm copying and pasting This is the story of me making of the Zombie Film, We had acuired a location, the Airport about half a mile from where i live, a DC-3 Aircraft was there on loan and we were able to use it as a location. I had been in contact with my actor for months, first to act in my Pirate Movie, but that fell through, so i had contacted him again about this Zombie script i had wrote, it all seemed to flow together, until the last week when we couldn't find an actress!!.... So i searched the entire week and finally friday came and we knew we couldn't find anyone... but we still decided to shoot something, so everything was arranged and heres the day: Oh, what a wonderful shooting today was. My Dp and I met at my house at 7AM to have him learn how to use the REDrock Micro 35,, Adapter System Then at 9 AM we headed to the location, and like my house, it was pouring rain, so we set up tents and cars quickly to prepare for the actors and crew The Actor arrived and then we set down to creating a script, since all our actresses fell through we started brainstorming ( I DON'T want people to follow my lead, we only did this because it was last minute drop outs and we were screwed, since we had a 35mm Adapter for a weekend and an actor, so we needed to shoot something. So we Did, the entire morning it poured, and we dealt with it. We came up with an idea and in a matter of a half an hour, we had a second actor (my cousin) and my entire extended family seemed to arrive and visit and help where it was needed, so shooting was good and we really came up with angles and dialog on the fly (Kinda a girly pic of me, whatever) But it started to clear up in the afternoon, after we lost one tent to the wind, we put everything down and dealt with the flying debris. So now we sat most of our gear in the cars, awaiting a massive rain storm, that never came. So we continued Shooting. But all in all it was a fun shoot, here are some pics: http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v121/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236442_8382.jpg http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v121/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236522_1597.jpg http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v121/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236523_2229.jpg http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v121/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236524_2852.jpg http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236561_7616.jpg http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236564_9358.jpg http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236630_6106.jpg http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236632_7010.jpg http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236633_7455.jpg http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236634_7908.jpg http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v121/13/104/624480170/n624480170_1236438_5957.jpg And here's a pic of the film, NOT COLOR CORRECTED http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v132/155/11/1236420567/n1236420567_30149023_9965.jpg _________________ Rob Rollin September 28th, 2007, 11:44 AM Nice stills Wes! You got some nice dof in the last two frame! I took a look at the bug footage, nice and crisp! Thx for sharing! Thanks, Mike Denis Malyavin October 2nd, 2007, 05:43 PM Hi, Just posting a stylized footage from a little walk I did in Leysin. The first shot and the shot with the gold retriever are done with a wideangle adapter, the WD-43 (not the HD version), so you can see the chromatic issues on when zoomed in, of full wide it dosnt look so bad. The style was take from Magic Bullet through the 32bit processing in Vegas 8, film noise was added after with XSI's compositor. No sound. Not very smooth in some places, the guilty party is shown in the end, you try keeping you monopod steady when you have a wild beagle attached to your hand :) http://www.malyavin.com/video/HV20.mov Martin Sinclair October 5th, 2007, 10:30 PM Interesting. Is the camera movement in the first scenes done with an effect of some sort? It looks very similar to the style used in tv shows and movies and is in my experience very hard to replicate with a small camera. |
