Cheers Steve

By the way it is possible to watch 24p on the fly if you use a PC using Media Player Classic, Dscaler 5 and the IVTC mod - then you get true 1080-24p (and it looks much better if your monitor is capable of 72hz for no judder)

Thanks for the info Fergus, I'll have to give that a try.

I'm hoping that we'll get some good weather for next weekend and I'll be able to head up to Mt Vernon, WA for the tulip festival. I think that would be a great place to get some footage. Tons of colors, mountain backdrops. Should really be able to show off what the camera can do. Then I can post some actual footage, not just a few frame grabs.

Here are a few shots I took with my Canon 20D last year from the festival. You can see why it would be great with a HD cam!

Here's a short clip (about 10 seconds) of my youngest getting his first "professional" hit during tonights T-Ball game. Was shot using regular HDV (no 24p yet) "sports" mode, exposure set at zero. Haven't done any color correction yet. Looks ok, maybe a bit dark on the computer. Reds need to be toned down for the TV though, very bright.

Rendered as WMV with standard 10% compression, interpolated fields..

Still learning a ton about all of this stuff and appreciate all the great information found on this forum.

Hey, that was very cute, and the picture looked great! Cute kid gets first hit, you'll be really happy to have that footage; him, too!

It sounded good, too. What was your audio setup?

Thanks Elmer and Joey. I'm still getting used to shooting video, been doing stills for so long, I'm used to setting up for one shot, not re-adjusting on the fly as the lighting is changing. Still a lot to get used to. My old cam I would just set on auto, but this one offers so many options, I just can't help myself and keep fiddling with them.

Elmer, for the audio, I have the Canon DM-50 mounted and was shooting in shotgun mode. So far that has done a really good job with this camera. I haven't tried shooting with the 2 stereo modes yet.

We had another game today, so I shot about an hour and 10 minutes with the BPL14 battery and did about ~35 minutes of capture. That left the battery with about 10% charge left. Not too bad I suppose.

Thanks for the info, Steve.

I take it those modes, shotgun and stereo, are modes on the DM-50. I didn't know it had that flexibility. I also really like that it's not so big.

best,
elmer

Steve Szudzik
April 14th, 2007, 01:37 PM
Yes, the DM-50 has three audio modes. Per the manual:

1- Shotgun: Clearly picks up sound arriving from the front of the microphone (monaural).
2- Stereo 1: Picks up sound arriving from the front of, as well as sound surrounding the microphone.
3- Stereo 2: Picks up sound surrounding the microphone in a wider range than Stereo 1.

I've been using shotgun at the games to try to reduce the "crowd noise" and pickup more from each of the kids, or the ball being hit. We're all packed pretty closely together there, so it still picks up a fair amount of the folks around me though. For a reasonably inexpensive mic, it does a good job.

Due to a slow certification process for this forum, my buddy Keegan asked that I direct your eyeballs to his growing collection of HV20 material at:

http://zaps21.com/HV20/video_clips/

Of particular note is his recent Redsox footage and pigeon01.

All clips are encoded as H.264, using a Mac, and are fully compatible with both Windows and Mac versions of Apple's QuickTime Player.

Cool footage. I like the scene mode comparisons. It custom color settings look so much better than the cine mode on my display. Did you notice the clips getting washed out in color when you compressed to quicktime?

The washed out look you speak of is actually a bug in the way QuickTime player uses Core Video to display the H.264. I hoping this will be fixed in Leopard as it's VERY annoying.

One solution I've found, and it's what I'm using for my HV20 footage (coming soon!) is to use Visual Hub (http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/) for the compression. This uses ffmpeg to encode the H.264, and it does not suffer from the washed out look.

Hi All

thought I would share some recent tests results with you regarding sharpening cine mode in post.

I took some 25p cine mode footage and brought it into Vegas. Then using sharpen I applied both medium and strong amounts and rendered seperately. This I then compared with the same scene in fully auto (still 25p).

My conclusion is that cine footage looks better with a medium amount of sharpening but with the strong preset its too much. Medium looks as sharp as the normal 25p footage without the cine mode on.

Also its amazing how much more is lost in auto mode. The branches of the trees in the top middle of the picture cannot be seen properly in auto and the tv aerial on the top left is completely gone!!

Here is the original cine scene:

With medium sharpen:

With strong sharpen:

I own an HV20 and have yet to play with the manual sharpen feature - I can capture uncompressed via component, so when I *do* try this, I'll keep a close eye on the results (and post? ;) )

Auto looks horrible! It makes me think: was the focus on manual or auto? Did the focus change at any time? Auto looks nothing like Cine with the sharpen on normal.

The question is: should we HV20 owners be shooting with Cine all the time?

Very Interesting! Going to do some of my own testing.

In fairness I might not have chosen the best frame grabs - especially the auto shot (in terms of sharpness) but the blown highlights are an issue full stop. I think cine just provides more latitude and is a good starting point.

720p, 58mb, 2:49. A little more compressed than is the norm around here, but it looks pretty good once you get past the complicated, choppy waters of Central Park.

I'm really impressed with this camera. I've been shooting entirely on Auto in 24p, and everything comes out fantastic (aside from a few shades of red I have mentioned). Also impressive to me is the image stabilization; I'm a very shaky shooter (can't take a 1/2 second still photo to save my life), but I'm able to get some very steady handheld shots, even at max zoom (see the boaters in the video).

Anyway, enjoy!

Nice work Joe! You've done a brilliant job with the editing. Love the strobe style edits. What editing software are you using? The fast shutter speed works well too.

If anything, I think a few levels adjustments would make a huge difference to the overall look. Bring out more of the colours. I normally use a histogram for checking how much adjustment needs to be made.

Here's my first quick test video I shot in 24p. didn't do a pull down to extract the 24p. I need to get Cineform to do that but I shot it in 24p so I could do it later. Edited it in PP2 and then exported in same aspect ratio as a compressed .wmv and uploaded to youtube. I'll try to get the higher res version up on the web so people can look at it. Even compressed on youtube it doesn't look too bad.

Well, not really a circus...

This was filmed on Alberta St in Portland, Oregon.
BOTH files are the same. One big one small. The smaller one has some artifacts and losses some richness in color due to low bit rate.
BIG - 111mb 1280 x 720 http://blip.tv/file/get/Road82-ablertaStBIG565.wmv
SMALL - 15.7mb 800x450 http://blip.tv/file/get/Road82-AlbertaSt666.wmv

The Accordion player is part of www.autopilotisforlovers.com
The circus people can be found at www.cirkuspandemonium.net
This was all filmed on Alberta St except for the two birds. They were hanging out under the Fremont bridge.
And the PGE park van was filmed downtown.

I dont know those people. Well, i do now that i filmed them. Didnt mean to make this into an advertisment of sorts.

Shot in Standard High Def. Shutter priority more 100fps? On a monopod mostly and i believe i had a "shade" setting.

Just a little fella I filmed who was sitting on the tree next door a couple of days ago. Shot in 25P, Cinemode, full zoom, hand held, OIS on, with a slight levels adjustment and some minor sharpening in Vegas 7. WMV9 (which leaves a lot to be desired), 17mb.

Scott Turkington
May 31st, 2007, 02:35 AM
I love it so far! I haven't got to shoot a whole lot with it but so far I'm blown away at the quality. I'm in the middle of editing the last project I shot with my GL2's. After I'm done with this project I'll have more time to start shooting in HD with they HV20. I'm selling both my Canon GL2's as we speak because it's time to upgrade to HD and this camera will suite my needs and best of all it's in my budget! Besides I want to get rid of the GL2's while there's still a demand for them. But IMO I'm happy to downgrade so to speak in the eyes of some people to the HV20 from the GL2's because I personally think the quality is far superior. I could care less that it only has one CCD sensor compared to the 3 in the GL2, the quality of video is undeniable. I haven't done much low light comparison, I think the GL2's do do better in low light but when the final video size is 1/3 the size of the HV20 and in almost all other situations the HV20 produces a Far superior picture, it's a no brainer switch for me. The only reason i would hesitate is if I was doing weddings or something and was going to be embarrassed by it's small size. luckily all my video projects are for DVDs and my clients don't care what I use as long as the final product looks good.

I did render that video in 24p which everyone is RAVING about on here but to be honest, I couldn't really tell any difference. I watched the video before pull down and after and they really looked so close I'm not sure I can see any difference.

haha so yeah to answer your question, I love it so far. I've watched the high resolution copy of the video you just downloaded over and over and I still get blown away at the leaves blowing in the wind and the clarity of the white geese. pretty amazing!

Yeah, the GL2 is a great camera. I had the PAL version XM2 myself. Probably the thing i miss the most would be the 20x zoom. Still I guess some HV20 footage could be cropped to emulate a 20x zoom at DV resolution! Or pay a lot extra and get an XHA1 which has the 20x zoom. A better camera for sure, but I've noticed purple fringing in a lot of XHA1 footage I've seen and the 24F just doesn't seem as sharp as 24P or 25P on the HV20.

By the way, I love your duck and geese shots. They are geese, right?

This 5 minute edited piece is part of a larger 20min capstone project for my school. I shot with the HV20, Brevis35 HD imaging bundle, and Canon FD f2 28mm, f1.4 50mm lenses.

In terms of editing, there was only one shot with color correction, and it was the exterior shot outside that I put a warmish glow to it. Other than that it was all from the Brevis/HV20

Its about a student dealing with depression, girls, social anxiety, basically whatever you think would constitute a hard time in a persons life...its not exactly revealed.

It was my first real project as a filmmaker/directer. As a crew of myself it was very difficult to light in the amount of time I had, but I think it worked out for the most part.

I wanted to have a documentary/home movie feel to the project, and I think I was successful in that. It was a personal project as well, because a lot of the scenes are reflections of memories I had during that year.

This looks great. I really like it. Out of focus in parts and inconsistant colour, but still a lot better than I'm sure it would have looked without the Brevis. Seems like a decent short too. No idea what's troubling him the most, but seems authentic enough. Nice one.

Will you be posting the completed 20 minute version anytime?
