We just recently had an article written about our movie by Fangoria Magazine.
We would like to use the article/interview in our electronic press kit. What is the protocol for using these types of articles (online or otherwise)? Does the magazine or newspaper need to be contacted or the writer themselves?

I spoke with another filmmaker in the UK who said they don't usually get permission but it is actually copyright infringement and persmission is needed.

The copyright for articles are sometimes held by the writer, sometimes by the publisher. It depends on their agreement. This is the same in the US and the UK.

You could try dropping a line to the publisher to ask for permission to use the article specifying its use. Offer them a link on your website.

I shouldn't have thought they would have a problem with it. Though be aware that some publishers charge for pdfs if they feel the article will be used for commercial gain or it takes them admin time.

I would feel comfortable quoting the article in a review fashion... "A wild ride and great fun!... Fangoria Magazine" without bothering to contact them. But if you are REPRODUCING the entire article for distribution in your press kit, even an electronic press kit, then I would definately contact them. Mags are pretty good about working with you on that.
