I have been traveling to Thailand now every year for the past 5 years and this past trip (March) I decided to take the HVX with me on a road trip around the North and some partial shots in the South. I was a little concerned about using the P2 becuase of space (vs dv tapes), but I shot in 720/24pn the entire time and carried my 17" powerbook with me. In the north I was on the road most the time, which made it actually quite easy to film and then get back on road and dump the clips with no real downtime or missed shots in the van. In the end, a 12" powerbook would have been nicer on the run and gun style (lower my backpack load), but make do with what you got. I was (and have been since) quite happy with the camera and its overall performance.

I’m still very new to the HVX and filming alone, so this clip is a bit rough. My background is in art, graphic design and motion graphics so this is an all new beast for me. So I apologize ahead of time for any shaky shots or what not. This was my first project with the HVX. This more of a travelogue than anything, but hope this clip and info helps anyone..

AWESOME! Great stuff Mike! It has a Kurosawaesq style to it. Did you use a 35mm adaptor or is that with the stock lens? I really like the atmosphere you created with the source sound and blurred edges. The voices over the fish almost make you think that the fish are talking :)

The black and white with the blurring/vignetting give it a lot of character. I'd love to see some of that stuff in color though and the full resolution. :) I wanted to see more of the elephant too.

Thanks guys. Some of the color I was able to work with was pretty amazing. I had it "finished" in color, but since the scenes are so different, the colors jumped around a lot and I was never totally happy. So I recently decided to make it just BW to tie it all together. No filters really, just a mask and blurred edges to give a vignette effect. I like to do this for when it’s played on TV it gives it more depth, at least to me. No 35mm adapter, just stock lens, mainly the post vignette I did gives it hat effect.

Here are a couple of the color screens. These have been color corrected, but mainly adjusting levels, which so far I have had to do on almost all my shots, but mainly from still learning the camera on my part.

I also liked the low bass during the aerobics. Seemed somehow anachronistic or otherwise out of place.
