In 1970, the tapes were placed in the US National Archives in Accession #69A4099. By 1984, all but two of the over 700 boxes of Apollo era magnetic tapes placed in the Accession, were removed and returned to the GSFC for permanent retention. These tapes are now missing.

Also some interesting info in this report about how the tapes were made, and how the quality of the images we're all familiar with was degraded by the scan conversion process.

Sure, that clears it all up...

“We are confident that they are stored at [NASA’s] Goddard Space Flight Center [in Greenbelt, Maryland] … we just don’t know where precisely”

Everytime I read one of these stories, I keep seeing that final scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark;-)

Interesting story, I noticed it made the national news this morning.

If they can't find those boxes, the loss is pretty significant, but in m my opinion only from a historical perspective because they still have three Apollo missions which provided good video. Only three, not five, because Apollo 12 and 14 don't really count for very much "good" video. Alan Bean inadvertantly fried the video camera at the start of the Apollo 12 lunar EVA (it was accidentally pointed at the sun for a quick second, which is all it took to destroy the sensor). Apollo 14's video was not much better than 11's. The only memorable thing that came out of it was Al Shephard's golf swing, and even that was pretty hazy. It wasn't until the final three Apollo missions that NASA was able to record some fairly decent color video from the surface of the moon. Now hopefully those boxes aren't missing too. Or... are they counting them as part of the 700 that they can't find?

Imagine what today's video enhancement technology can do to those Apollo 11 tapes. If anybody has seen "Magnificent Desolation" in 3D at the IMAX, it's a good indication of what's possible. I thought it looked just a tad too computer generated, but it gives you a pretty good idea. Consider how amazing the video will look in the near future, the next time we go to the moon.

Frank, I loved the ebay comment, but don't tell anyone, my 13.00 dollars is holding steady....

My favorite story about these "fake moon landing" crackpots is the one from Sept.
2002, when a California judge no-billed Buzz Aldrin for slugging one of them.

Buzz is a true American Hero, and that Sibrel event only adds to Buzz' stature IMO. The 22d Fighter Squadron, Spangdahlem AB, Germany, flew him in an F-16 some years back and subsequently they proudly displayed in the squadron building a large photo of Buzz wearing a big SEG ("grin") and with his flight suit zipper opened wide to reveal a T-shirt that said, "Why, yes, I AM a rocket scientist." The Right Stuff all the way!

I hope they find those tapes, but I ain't holding my breath.

What is it with these crackpot journalists? They make up stories, photoshop pictures, and attack people... when did the poparatzi start breeding with the tabloid reporters? Charleton Heston was deathly ill, and he was harrassed to no end by one of those lowlifes.

Perhaps these tapes were made to disappear, so that the improved means of recording analysis that are now available, couldn't be used to reveal the fabrications in their content.

now you know what area51 was used for....
anyway a simple check would be easy.
the Apollo mission left a lot of equipment on the moon. A simple powerful telescope should be able to see it. Or should we just go there to check...

Looks like there has been or are plans to take high resolution photos of the Apollo landing sites.

At least one proponent of the idea the landings were hoaxed, Marcus Allen, believes NASA artifacts were placed on the moon by robots. It is rather hard to argue with people who hold beliefs like that.

NetFlix has been hawking the entire "Moon Landing" series for a year now . . . and it takes weeks to watch all that fake B&W footage . . . but I assure you the popcorn is real, and so is the deadly MTB (Movie Theatre Butter)!
