I exported a couple times an 8 year old tape with vegas, and both times
with the hc-3, it said it dropped 150 frames, but when I used the gs300 to
export to the computer it does it cleanly with no dropped frames.

Should I be concerned?

I don't have that much footage shot yet with the hc-3.
But the few minutes I have downloaded is fine so far.

I shot the original footage with a jvc and borrowed the gs300 from a coworker to run a test.

I've seen certain cams not wanting to properly play another cam's tapes even though they both might be MiniDV format. This may be one of those scenarios in which case you might want to get a cheap MiniDV cam to transfer but your HC3 sounds fine to me.

I have the A1U but I'm not going to use it to play my massive library of SD MiniDV tapes. I've been looking for a SD cam on eBay with something like a broke lens but a working deck for under $100.

Well, I have a canon zr20 that eats tapes, so I have to use the hc-3 to download. I'm on my goal to transfer all my tapes to dvd to I don't have
to watch the tapes....

Seems like we have similar goals. Are you going to look for another cheap cam for transfer?

I'm looking at about 50 tapes but luckily I want a decent RCA MiniDV cam on eBay for $77 yesterday. Fingers crossed.

My recently acquired RCA CC9370 works flawlessly for capturing and transfer over firewire. I even picked up a souped up battery at Sears on ultra clearance.

Now I just need someone to transfer 50 hours of footage to DVD. Any takers? :)

Consider using a DI (Direct/Digital Intermediate), that may help. Try www.cineform.com for more.

Be sure to create labels for your dvd discs instead of using a sharpie....:p

I'm sorry, I just made a joke to spend more time creating a label
than a few seconds with a sharpie since you had 50 hours of tape
which I assume would be 50 dvds.....

I spend extra time by grabbing a frame from the footage and use
it for the background of the label to make it more interesting.

Richard, have you used another program to do the export? If you have XP you could try Windows Movie Maker.

Adhesive labels. I don't have a lightscribe burner.

I'll give it a test run with movie maker when I get a chance,
although I've burned my dvd using the import from the gs300 already.
