I don't have a HD monitor (sucks to be me), so I am going to bring my Laptop to the shoot and watch the setup for Focus on the Laptop. Having said that, is this a decent sub for not having or affording an HD monitor ? What screen size settings should I use?

Ok thanks. I am not sure which of those programs to download - but I am also curious about the size settings as well for my laptop.

As long as you’re willing to bring a laptop, why not get Serious Magic HDV Rack software and you’ll not only have a color accurate HD monitor but you’ll get full scopes, waveform monitor, vectorscope, bars, blue gun, underscan, focus assist, etc. and hard disk recording as well. Your tape becomes a safety backup for the hard drive. I use HDV Rack all the time and it’s an outstanding piece of software.

DV Rack and HDV Rack turn your laptop into a video recorder with a calibratible field monitor. You get color bars and a blue gun switch and you calibrate it just like you would a real CRT monitor. This means you can trust the colors that you see to be the colors you will get. It also comes with cards to help you focus, adjust exposure, and white balance with a vector score and waveform monitor built-in. If you do any chroma key work and ever wondered if your green screen was lit evenly, the waveform monitor tells no lies. It will help you set your lights up quickly.

Finally, it will record everything to your hard drive. It synchronizes with your camera and automatically starts and stops when the camera does. You forget it’s even there. It monitors the audio showing you the waveform and any peaks in real-time so you can see if you are clipping. If you press Alt+Enter it will hide the scopes and audio and give you a full screen display to monitor your picture at full resolution. When you’re done you just start editing. No need to capture because you already have the footage on your laptop.

I would download the demo and check it out. I was skeptical at first but once I started using it, I won’t shoot without it. I think you will be quite amazed at what it can do for the quality of your footage.
