View Full Version : Slow zoom speed?

Hey everyone, this is my first post so go easy on me. I've been an XL1s user for about four years and recently received the XL2. As soon as I assembled the XL2, however, I noticed that the zoom speed on the 20x lens was considerably slower than it was with the 16x lens on the XL1s, even when the setting was on "constant" and I cranked the speed to its highest setting "16". It was a brand new camera and lens, so my first thought was that we had somehow missed this drawback when we were researching the XL2. To test the problem, I put the original 16x lens on the XL2 and it worked perfectly. When I put the 20x on the XL1s, however, I encountered the same problem, meaning it was an issue with the lens. I called Canon and they told me that it was indeed a problem with the lens, and that it should be able to zoom similarly to the 16x. While I believe Canon, I can't help but be a little suspicious that a brand new lens was having this problem. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Will my worries be put to bed when the replacement arrives?

Dan - have you checked the internal Menu settings: Menu, Camera Setup, Zoom handle: Low/middle/high; and F Speed Pset Low/midle/high?

Thanks for replying Tony. I did adjust the zoom handle to "high", however I did not adjust the F Speed. Could it have made that big of a difference? The zoom speed was less than half the speed of the 16x lens.

F Speed (focus speed) probably won't affect it. If the 20x seems slower, remember it has a longer focal length range to pull through.
