View Full Version : 200HP Dolly ;-)
Bill Hamell July 3rd, 2006, 01:41 PM Got the MoJo working on the car mount added the safety straps for the mount this morning will work on a safety wire for the camera this after noon.
I am going to switch to the Bogan 241 vacuum cups I think they will be more versatile and easier to use. As it sits it is rock solid and fairly easy to adjust.
I would like some options I used the TA-100 quick release on the cheese plate.
Do you think I should attach the camera directly to the cheese plate?
Bill
EDIT: I added two more images with out the camera or the QR mount.
Mike Teutsch July 3rd, 2006, 02:04 PM Bill,
Not sure about the plate, but just mount everything as simply and securely as possible, since it will be locked down during use. Nothing fancy will be needed I would think.
I believe you can get 200hp from that dolly though! :)

Bill Hamell July 3rd, 2006, 02:21 PM Mike,
Thank you for the comment.
The more I think about it I tend to agree the quick-release is not needed.
However it sure does make it nice and easy.
Took the mount for a test drive (no camera till I make the safety strap) no bouncing the strap did not flail around at least up to 45 mph, now I know that it will stay on, I’ll whistle it down the highway to see if it holds up to higher speeds.

Mike Teutsch July 3rd, 2006, 02:43 PM Bill,
With the good cups and a clean surface, I don't think you will have any problems. I've seen them with much less.
Mike
Bill Hamell July 3rd, 2006, 05:34 PM Good to know.
I put four new holes in the cheese plate and tomorrow I will get four longer screws then I will be able to bolt the camera right to the plate without the adapter.
Anyone happen to know the thread size and pitch on the bottom of an XL2?
I know they are metric but that's all I know.
Bill
Bill Hamell July 3rd, 2006, 05:44 PM ATTENTION ADMIN:
I did not know about the Vehicle Mount Forum would you please move this topic.
Sorry,

Bill,
Actually they are not metric, but are SAE 1/4-20. In other words U.S..

Bill Hamell July 3rd, 2006, 06:29 PM Hear the Buzzer? Wrong answer! :-)
Yes the tripod screw is 1/4" - 20 but the four smaller screws that hold the plate for the TA-100 are not. ;-)
Thanks for helping. :-)

Joe Barker July 3rd, 2006, 06:33 PM Thats an interesting design using the mechanicle locking cups. The one I made uses four 3" non mechanicle suction cups fixed to a platform and the camera sits on an adjustable arm that can be raised or lowered and the camera mount can be tilted back and forth.I have holes in the base platform and hold the rig dowm with straps.Completely differant design but same result. Can you get those mechanicle suction cups in 3'' diameter? They look more secure for when I mount the rig on the car door.

That's what I was refering to, did I misunderstand him?

Thank you Joe, yes they sure do. :-)

Must have, a 6-32 just touches the sides an 8-32 starts to thread then binds, so I'm thinking metric. however typeing this made me think 8-24 I'll try it and see.

I was refering to the tripod mount, as I have never used any other. If the others are 8-32 or metric of the same basic size, I think I would used the tripod mount.

Bill Hamell July 4th, 2006, 06:56 AM They are M4 .70 screws for anyone else that will try this with the XL2.
I used ones that were 16mm in lenth with a 3/8" thick cheese plate.

When I drilled the holes for the M4 screws I centered them around one of the cheese plate holes, so I could do this very thing.
Great minds you know!

Bill,
That's good, as the actual contact area or engagement area of these screws is very small indeed, maybe .005 to .008. Not really meant to hold much of a load.

Bill Hamell July 4th, 2006, 08:49 AM Hey, I can post images and I do belong to AARP! (Yet!) :-)
So here's one more.
It is finilly mounted directly to the cheese plate...
Also you will see the Footman Loops for the saftey straps.
Think it will go anywhere? :-)

Mike Teutsch July 9th, 2006, 03:41 PM Bill,
One last note I have been forgetting to add, but please put a filter on the lens! Got to keep those nasty bugs off.

There is ALWAYS a filter on all my lenses.
The only exception (I do not think this will apply to the XL2) is when doing macro work sometimes the focus distance is closer than the filter will allow.
Good thinking though. :-)

Ainslie Davies July 9th, 2006, 10:41 PM Wow, that rig is intense! I got away with using just one vacuum cup for my FX1. I had a the cup on the bonnet (hood (dang Americans:) and a small tripod directly over it, with tort bungie cords wrapped all around the tripod and the suction/vacuum cup. Thinking back, that was kind of crazy with no safety leaches or anything but that's what I do! Good work.

That's exactly the info I wanted. I too tried the 6/32 bolt but it looked suspect because there was lots of play until it hit bottom. I also thought metric was what I needed. Thanks for popping back in here to fill in the details.
Now I'm off to look for thumbscrews of that size.
