I'm a PD170 owner/operator and use the Sony Premium quality Mini DV tapes for everything so far. I've recently gotten a gig shooting some material for a client that has money behind them and isn't asking questions when I present them with expense $$ amounts. I was thinking of getting some Sony DVCam (mini) tapes.
Now again, I use Sony Premium tape exclusively (bulk deals). Will using a different line of the same brand tape cause the problems that are theoretically associated with switching brands after long hauls with one brand?
Thanks!

~~Dave

Short answer: no. Long answer: probably not.

This topic has been beaten to death. The only question arises from changing or mixing brands. Why this would happen is a mystery to me. The other issue is why some people want to reuse tape. It is the cheapest aspect of video. Don't compromise. Use once, and archive.

The other issue is why some people want to reuse tape. It is the cheapest aspect of video. Don't compromise. Use once, and archive.I hear what you're saying, but sometimes things get tough and I have to choose between buying new tapes and eating food. Eating food wins every time. I like to do it every day.

That said, I only re-use tapes if I'm going to be shooting something relatively unimportant, and only then if I absolutely must.

In a perfect world, I'd only use new stock. But being self-employed in a relatively small market is often pretty far from perfect.

As for the actual topic of the thread--I doubt you'll have any trouble, Dave.
