I am sorry to bother with a silly question and hope that I don't abuse your time.
How can I make my HVR-Z1U to display the recorded time (in real time)?

In your menu go to others, and then down to date rec, which is just below your hours meter. Switch it on and your camera will record the date and time on the bottom of your screen.
