View Full Version : Show Your Work 2007
Jeremiah McLamb July 24th, 2007, 11:06 PM posted this in the XH-A1 section..but thought i'd post here too..
Just finished a short 8 minute piece that preludes an hour long piece of the same topic. Followed the youth missions team from my church down to panama city and the san blas islands and documented their work (and fun). Shot it with a canon xh-a1..everything else done in vegas 7.
(and it is 400 something MB..so it's kind of big..i'm going to put a smaller version up tomorrow sometime)

let me know what you think...

Shayne Weyker July 26th, 2007, 11:05 AM Hi all.
A stone business has a nice showroom they wanted to show off on their website. So on spec I did the following by myself with a GL2, tripod, a wide adapter (sometimes) and a couple lights on stands. Editing in Final Cut Suite, music from Soundtrack Pro's libraries. I will buy better music if the client will pay for it.
http://weykervideo.com/video/corporate.wmv
The reflections on the polished stone are annoying but I didn't have the time/tools to clamp lights to the ceiling frame where the built-in lights were an point them down. I did diffuse my lights-on-stands I in most shots. If I go back I may well try and up-lamp the exisiting overhead fixtures to get more light.
That vignette effect in the last shot across the table is to hide a light stand, so it needs to stay.
Any advice on things I could do to make it better in post is welcome.

Ulrik [fC] July 27th, 2007, 07:37 AM I really like it. Cool camerawork, great colors and locations and good idea. I think only the acting/ dialoge was a little bit fake every now and then, but besides that real fun to watch !

Sean Doherty July 29th, 2007, 08:51 PM The 2nd Annual Estes Park Film Festival Announces Official Selections
Showcasing over 50 independent films from around the world, the 2nd Annual Estes Park Film Festival will take place September 14-16 at the Historic Park Theatre in downtown Estes Park, Colorado. Built in 1913, the Park Theatre is one of the oldest movie theatres still operating in America. In addition to the Park Theatre, suspense and horror films will screen at the Historic Stanley Hotel, which is famous for its inspirational role in Stephen King's book & film, "The Shining". Student films will also screen at the Lake Shore Lodge as part of our Student Filmmaker Showcase. Included in this year’s line-up is the hilarious comedy “Life with Fiona” about Scott Parker who's unlucky in love - that is, until he meets the woman of his dreams. Joe D’Augustine’s “One Night with You” is about down-on-his-luck Jake Tarlow (Mark Boone Junior) who has to get reclusive writer Hunter Burnell (Michael Parks) to an important meeting in what will probably be the last great time of his life. Other feature films include the quirky documentary “Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea” about California’s newest ecological time bomb, and at the Stanley Hotel “The 4th Dimension” explores the dark and lonely world between dreams and reality.
Short Films include the poignant story “Trail End” about Hank (Barry Corbin) and his last ride across Kansas with the help of his best friend Chip -- an old Appaloosa. A lonely, high functioning mentally challenged man falls in love with a 900 sex-line operator, and through that call, both find redemption in the funny and inspiring “My Name is Wallace”. At the Student Filmmaker Showcase an old man comes back home and tries to reconcile himself with his family who are all immortal and never age in “The Old Son”. Other short films include Sheila Schroeder’s newest documentary “Crunch!”, the apocalyptic “Café at the Crossroads”, and the mysterious “Twilight of Youth”.
Many of the filmmakers will be on hand to introduce their films and will take part in a Q&A on the creative process of getting their films from script to screen. There will also be plenty of parties where you can mingle with the filmmakers and other film enthusiasts. Ticket information and the complete schedule of film screenings, workshops, parties, and panel discussions are available on the festival web site: www.estesparkfilm.com.

Meryem Ersoz July 29th, 2007, 09:59 PM Two of my friends have films in this festival. Wish I could be there. Wish I could have submitted something again, but I was too busy shooting corporate stuff and a triathlon. Next year, next year. I should have a little something to submit. A few little somethings!
Sean runs a great festival. Y'all oughta submit stuff, all you DVCers and UWOLers. Estes Park is a great place to visit. Elk everywhere. Good coffee. Great films.

Kevin Randolph July 30th, 2007, 03:52 PM Love the final result. Would you care to divulge a little bit of your process? Without, of course, revealing trade secrets.
Really, quite beautiful.

Kevin Randolph July 31st, 2007, 01:41 PM Here's the You Tube link for a promotional video for the Highland County Community Action Agency's Senior Nutrition Program that I did earlier this year. It's about 7 minutes. Please let me know what you think and I am definitely open to constructive criticism... That's why I posted it. I am looking for feedback that will make me better from the people on this forum. But please, don't be rude :)

Jon Fairhurst July 31st, 2007, 03:43 PM Here's our latest Webisode, including two fight scenes - one with a maniacal Koala-bot!
http://colonelcrush.com/movie/index/00220501
Personally, I think the music is the real key to generating adrenaline, but I would say that. I'm the composer. ;)
Matt Buys July 31st, 2007, 06:01 PM Very nice.
Michael Rapadas July 31st, 2007, 08:52 PM pretty neat! maybe one day i could use some stock effects/composites like that! keep it up
C.M. de la Vega August 1st, 2007, 07:02 AM that koala was freaky man!
you did a good job with the score... by the way, what software do you use to make the music?
I've watched a couple episodes and a mini-movie (snakes on a car - loved it) and it looks like you guys are having lots of fun doing all this, which is what filmmaking is all about. Just wanna ask, how long does it take you guys to write, shoot and edit a webisode?
C.M. de la Vega August 1st, 2007, 07:09 AM I directed a music video for this unique parody artist, reminds me a lot of weird Al. Here's the clip:

Jon Fairhurst August 1st, 2007, 11:32 AM Hi C. M.
I use Sonar 6 for sequencing MIDI. The key is good sample libs. I use GigaStudio 3 (http://tascamgiga.com) as the sampler with a wide variety of libraries, including VSL's Appassionata Strings (http://vsl.co.at) and Westgate Studios' Modular Series woodwinds and horns (http://westgatestudios.com). I've collected a wide range of percussion samples over the years, and many good samples come free with GigaStudio 3 Orchestra.
One of the critical components is the ambiance or reverb. I use GigaPulse's Medium Hall. It makes the difference between a Taiko hit sounding like a kid's drum and a giant war beater. I wrote a tutorial here: http://tascamgiga.com/gp/intro.html
I do all of the mixing and EQ in Vegas or ACID, and I master with Sonic Foundry 9's Izotope Mastering Bundle.
Our approach is very improvisational, so the writing is quick and dirty. When we do write, it's often unrealistic, given sets and props. Nathan adjusts on the fly.
We shot From Russia with ACTION in four relatively short days. It will end up being seven webisodes and a trailer. Editing is difficult to estimate. Some weeks Nathan cranks it out fast, other weeks he really has to fight it - and sometimes he gets a bit nuts with the effects. Webisode 2 with the Bond theme was a real time eater!
I usually compose/mix/master a webisode in a weekend. Some weeks go quickly, mainly when there's little music, or when I get lazy. Other weeks, like this fight webisode, are pretty intense.
The real challenge is promotion. (And if it does take off, paying for hosting.) AskaNinja.com gets something like 500,000 views a week, and they sold a seven figure advertising deal. I'd love to know what steps they took to make that happen.
But, like you said, it's really about having fun. And we definitely know how to do that!
Michael Rapadas August 1st, 2007, 11:39 PM http://youtube.com/watch?v=59z55AT5snA
I loosely scripted this and finally spent a good amount of time in preproduction!! Please comment and let me know how i've done! Thanks
Chris Harris August 2nd, 2007, 01:07 AM Dude, that's sweet, I like it! As usual with your pieces, everything's well done. The idea, camera work, editing, music, and the performances. Good luck in that competition!
Mike Peter Reed August 2nd, 2007, 02:34 AM it's not too shabby on production values but the concept is lost on me. it won't be in my mind when I pick up the HP sauce .....
Alex Amira August 2nd, 2007, 09:11 AM Nice...I think you need some dramatic music for the "action scenes"...
C.M. de la Vega August 2nd, 2007, 09:47 AM Jon,
Thanks 4 sharing the info. I've dabbled a little into scoring, not much - used Fruity Loops to make simple arrangements. I'm going 2 read the tutorial.
Registering on your site keeps you posted when the new episodes come out?
The t-shirt bullet proof teaser was off the wall and good luck with promotion.
- Carlos
C.M. de la Vega August 2nd, 2007, 09:50 AM I thought it was good but I think it needs a better VO at the end and play around with your EQ settings to get that 2-way radio sound when the Marines are communicating.
Mike Horrigan August 2nd, 2007, 01:05 PM Please check out the teaser for my new short film.
FEAR TEASER (http://www.morecowbellpictures.com/downloads/fear_teaser.mov)
It is very near completion. I plan on entering it into a local film festival.
Let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Mike
Jon Fairhurst August 2nd, 2007, 07:43 PM Registering on your site keeps you posted when the new episodes come out?Hi Carlos,
We release new material every week on Mondays at noon, PST. We have yet to send out any e-mail to registered people, but we might if there's a big announcement, or site redesign. By registering you can post comments on the site.
If you want to get regular notifications, we have an RSS feed. http://colonelcrush.com/rss
I really like RSS for sites that post new articles only a few times a week. I don't have to bother checking for updates, and I get notified of new material right away.
All the best...
Jason Sovey August 4th, 2007, 06:44 PM Good camera work, I like the use of CUs and ECUs to establish mood. The overhead shot in the closet was a nice touch. In B&W, I would bring the lighting down to establish a darker film-noir look.
As far as the content is concerned, I think the pace was a bit monotonous for the length and the ending. The build-up could have worked in the context of a larger piece. As it is, it seemed to take on a comedic air. I was expecting a pie-in-the-face ending, perhaps in slo-mo. "I'll do it slow. It's what she deserves."
But being that it's only your second short, I think it's really good. You definitely have a good base from which to expand upon.
Steven Houser August 5th, 2007, 01:50 PM Hey guys, I need help to get best quality for utube..

Dana Acciavatti August 6th, 2007, 10:27 PM Okay, no comments on the first one - very bad sign.
Here is another quick attempt at the Heinz Contest before the deadline.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-j2DzUm7EY
Got it in just minutes before the midnight deadline. Whew!
It was so tough to get a good take the kids -especially at the same time (the hot dog missed a few takes as well), but I tried anyway.
Cole McDonald August 7th, 2007, 12:24 AM I like the second one alot...I'm a parent.
Dana Acciavatti August 7th, 2007, 08:06 AM Thanks. I really appreciate the feedback.
Mustafa Davis August 7th, 2007, 10:00 AM This is some pre-production test footage I shot with a Canon XL-H1. It was shot in PAL 25f and downconverted for web compression. Its too bad you can't see the beauty of the original footage (due to compression).
This is not a film trailer, just footage shot in a lighting test. There are no lights used in any of the shots, everything is natural existing light. No reflectors, etc. All footage was shot hendheld with the stock Canon lens.

Marco van Belle August 7th, 2007, 12:40 PM Hey guys,
Thought I'd post this link for a music video shot on a Z1 with Wayne Kinney's SGPro adaptor.
I directed and cut it at the beginning of the year. Shot on location in the bands local pub (where they formed).
The brief was to do something that captured the lifestyle / tone / rough 'n ready sound of the band - which was all we could do with what we had available.
We had zero budget (everyone on camera is a real pub regular) and 8 hours to get in, set up, shoot and get out before the pub opened for real.
Would be great to hear any feedback you've got.
Click on the 'watch video' link on this page to see it:

Best,
Marco
Matt Garrett August 7th, 2007, 01:23 PM doesn't load for me.
Seems like you had quite a challenge on your hands though!
Mike Horrigan August 7th, 2007, 02:11 PM Nice work! Very nice looking clip, loved the bit with the TV as well.
Catchy song too!
Mike
Hyun De Grande August 7th, 2007, 04:02 PM I would really like some comments on my movies..
I've been studying film for 5 years now, and since some of you guys are pro's, it would be great to have some insight from you.
Most of 'em have no dialogue, but the ones that have, are in dutch (I'm from Belgium), so.. Just so you know.
The films that I've uploaded so far are just a selection of what I've done, so there's more to come pretty soon..
(the link is in the sig.)
I thank you in advance!
Grts.
Mustafa Davis August 8th, 2007, 05:23 AM You got some really moving/emotional footage there and it ties in well with the interviews. I almost didn't get to catch it though because I was just about to click away before the action footage began.
You only have moments to grab the attention of the viewer and I think the footage you started with was the least engaging of all your shots. It give the impression that we are about to watch 8 minutes of some people sitting around a table talking.
Great work... I'd definitely be interested in seeing the whole film.
Tomas Stavik August 8th, 2007, 12:43 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1u0vdIke2E
shot in 25p with 1/120 shutter..
hope you like it...
here's a better quality version +with better colors (at least I think so)
http://download.yousendit.com/6A0744810613BA05
It's a BIG file.. 290MB (but it's worth it)
Lisa Shofner August 8th, 2007, 01:41 PM Like I mentioned in my YouTube comment, I like the styling and music. Definitely you need to pick up a stabilizer of some sort. I have a monopod that I picked up from walmart for under $20. It is GREAT, can't remember the brand off hand but there is none better for under $100. I haven't seen the same thing anywhere else either, for some reason. So you can stabilize for cheap. I carry my monopod to places where I might not have the time or space to set up a tripod (or the ability to carry a 15lb tripod even).
Since you are not in the USA, I have no idea what store to point you to for low-price monopod.
Good job with the DVX for your first video with it. It takes a long time to learn all the settings on that thing, I learn more and more with each video I shoot. Check out the book "The DV Rebel's Guide" by Stu Maschwitz for some great tips specifically for the DVX.
Tomas Stavik August 8th, 2007, 01:54 PM thanks a lot for the comment:)
it's a bit more expensive here in norway.. but I'm gonna get one eventually:)
Josh Bass August 8th, 2007, 03:17 PM Okay, DP'd is probably a strong word, as they had it shotlisted/storyboarded/scouted/etc. before I came onboard, but I had input on composition, exposure, DOF, those types of things.
This was done in completely available light, save for one shot where I used a reflector (I don't even think this ended up in the final cut), on a slightly rainy overcast day.
We used my XL2, on the factory default settings, 24p, 4:3.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWE0hsebje0
Michael Rapadas August 8th, 2007, 04:24 PM violent, but i like it! gets the message across and the incident is so sudden its actually funny to me; considering that i dont like super-violent commercial spots. Great work! and the lighting was perfect for the feel-good atmosphere.
