Hello All!

I am new here but feel welcomed!

I just recently got my new Sony HDR-HC1 camcorder!
I am going to use it for a Documentary about people with UC (Ulcerative Colitis) & Colon Cancer. I will be doing some video of myself since I also suffer from UC!

I found DVi forums and have found soooo much info here! I actually based my HC1 purchase from reviews found in the forums!

I could not afford the A1U so figured if I got the HC1 and spent a little $$ for some extras then I will be set! I was in a hurry to buy as well!

Due to my very very small budget.....like no money! I have to use what I currently have for now!

I will do mostly interviews and group seminar video.

I have posted some pics of my setup!

I have the following accessories:

* Rode VideoMic
* Beachtek DXA-2s
* Hoodman viewfinder eyeshade
* 2 FM50 sony batteries and 1 FM71 battery for longer life
* 1 radio shack wired lav mic
* Kata portable soft bag

I will get some cheap lighting soon!

I want to get the A1U lens hood with built in lens cover next!
Unfortunately it costs $71! =(

What do you think of my setup? Is it Documentary worthy for an amateur like myself?

Jamie,

Thanks for the compliment!

YES IT IS A GREAT CAMERA!! for the price, it can't be beat.

It's funny that Sony decided to downgrade it with the HC3.

I'm sure glad I got the HC1 before it was discontinued!

If I could have afforded the A1U I would have got that model....

Charlie

Where did you get the cold shoe adapter? Looks slick.

Yes, it sure looks neat. Thought about it too. But also, since the wide-angle lens really works well with the 16:9 HD mode, and most people (including myself) seem to use it alot, that neat $71 A1 hood is not going to fit on it.

So personally, I think you would be better off spending the $71 towards getting the wide-angle lens rather than the hood, but you decide.

I got the cold shoe adapter at a local camera shop. It was for a canon camera and had a wire that connected to a camera. So technically it is a Hot Shoe adapter. I just cut off the wire and voila!

I used the advice from the following link and it works well....just a little toolwork is needed but it was rather easy!

Marc,
I already have a Sony Wide Angle lens.....I use it alot too!

I just like the convenience of the A1 lens cover integrated in the hood.

Charlie, this is the way I mount accessories to my HC1:

using this:

We just shot a wedding with this setup and it worked great! It even handles pretty good off the tripod. There are actually 2 shoes on this adapter--the side one is hard to see in B&H's pic.

Nice setup Stephen!

I want to get that bracket also. For the times when I need a light to be mounted along with the microphone.

I also found this bracket to be helpful for tripod use.

I think that will be my next purchase!!
Very important piece to have I think!

That's really funny, because I've been working on my own design for a tripod adapter. (I have access to a full machine shop.) I hate bottom loaders! I was even thinking I might be able to sell them--but it looks like somebody beat me to it! Oh well, at least I can make my own and won't have to pay $50 for one.
