The spring-loaded guide on my tripod makes it difficult to align the HD1 onto the mounting plate. My solution was to use a section from a 1/4" bolt and two threaded "couplers" as a standoff device. The "couplers" are like thick nuts about 7/8" long, and seem to be a pretty standard item. Cut the bolt long enough to leave about 1/4" of the thread exposed for the camera, while leaving enough room at the other end for the tripod mounting plate. Tighten the two "nuts" securely so that the threads are locked in the right position, and you have only one "extender" to deal with.

I thought the two couplers would also keep the HD1 high enough to use the adapter block (that came with the HD1) with the AC adapter for long shoots. The block is OK, but there is not enough room for the DC plug as well. Next time at the hardware store, I will get another coupler, hopefully that will be enough. You could make a shorter "extender" with a coupler and one nut if you didn't care about external power or video hookup.

Alternatively, hang the camera off the edge of the tripod head, good support for the camera and easy access for the power cable... Though personally I can not figure out why they did not find space for a power plug somewhere else.
